The Clumber Spaniel is an ideal dog for many families. Their general nature is to be genial, easy to get along with, and even friendly. While these dogs were once used by hunters, it was more for their companionship rather than their skill of hunting. The characteristics of that companionship are still found in today's breed. If you are considering adding the Clumber Spaniel to your family, know what you will get from them. You may be impressed with just how easy it is to add them to your life.

What Are They Like

Before purchasing the Clumber Spaniel, be sure that you know what they are like and if this is agreeable to your family situation. Most in the breed are low key animals. They are not overly excited, nor do they show signs of aggression. It is common for these dogs to be a bit mischievous and they do often get into things that you do not want them to do. With that in mind, the Clumber Spaniel will fit well in most homes. With children, be careful balancing the energy of these dogs with that of the children. Children that are lower key or that are well behaved will fit well with this pet. Always supervise children with these dogs.

If your family has other pets, another warning should be considered. Because Clumber Spaniels are hunting dogs, they may very well go after other pets that they deem to be their prey. In most cases, though, this is unlikely to happen with other dogs and cats. Fish, birds, and rodents may be a different story! The Clumber Spaniel is likely to do very well with your other dogs of the same temperament.

What You Have To Do For Them

When introducing the Clumber Spaniel to your home, pay attention to the nature of the pet. Most pups and younger pets will have little socializing skills at this point. It will be important for you to slowly introduce them to new people and to other pets. Keep children calm and quiet during these first moments and as much as possible during the first days in the home. Should the dog feel scared or otherwise bothered, they may become very shy animals.

Prepare your home for your Clumber Spaniel. They can get into anything and everything. They are likely to climb over anything and dig around if they believe something that they want is lurking underneath. Most importantly, prepare your home for a very easy going pet as these dogs are not likely to fit well in a very highly active atmosphere. They are lower energy pets and will fit well into surroundings like this.

Take the time to prepare your family for a pet that you will cherish in the Clumber Spaniel and you will have a successful introduction of these dogs into your home.
