With such a cuddly looking face, it's hard to believe that a Chinese Shar Pei could serve as a watch dog. But traditionally in China, the Shar Pei was bred as a fighting dog, that's why its skin is so wrinkly; if struck by an opponent, the folds protect the major organs to limit the injury. Intelligent and loyal by nature, the Shar Pei makes a perfect watch dog for any home. These cute and cuddly pups make great family pets as well as watch dogs. It's like having an alarm, but cuter!

Independent or Stubborn?

One of the greatest characteristics displayed by the Shar Pei is its independence. This independence makes the Shar Pei a great candidate to be a watch dog because it can work independently of its owner and maintain focus. Sometimes, the independence exhibited by the Shar Pei can put it at odds with its owner. Often, this independence will show up as stubbornness and you will find yourself at a standstill with your pooch. If you are undertaking the task of training your Shar Pei, be firm with it during training to remind it that you are the boss. Obedience classes are strongly recommended for Shar Peis.

Naturally suspicious of strangers, the Shar Pei is also very protective of its home and family, and it won't hesitate to bark at any person it does not recognize. Since the Shar Pei was bred for fighting, it is a remarkably strong dog, willing to protect its family at any length.

Confidence

The Shar Pei likes to do things its own way, and socializing or training it as a watch dog will require a firm voice and sure leadership. Because it is so independent, the Shar Pei will require you to clearly establish your role as leader. Sometimes, other members of your family may not be able to command your Shar Pei because they have not been established as the leader. Keep the training consistent as well if you really want your pup to become the family guardian. Training at a specific time each day will not only establish your role as the leader, but it will also give your Shar Pei the needed discipline to be the perfect watch dog.

Projecting your voice with confidence will help you establish your role, but don't mistake firmness for meanness. Your Shar Pei will respond best to positive reinforcements, so each time a task has been completed successfully, reward your dog. To properly train your dog, all you need is a confident voice and demeanor. Establish a relationship with your dog as both friend and leader, and you'll be ready to dress your Shar Pei as a Beefeater in no time!
