I took my male schnauzer to the groomers on Thursday and by Friday night he was going nuts!! She did express his anal glands and only used scissors on his tail and around this area because I told her the last time he got his hair done he was very irritated. Anyways his bum is very red and under his tail and at the top of his bum it is swollen . She had given me some preperation h to put on him if he got irritated but he won't stop licking it off I tried putting panties on the poor thing and cortate cream and lanicane but nothing seems to work. All he is doing is running and stopping to lick himself so now he is spending every minute in his bed .It is almost like he is embarassed about it. Is there anything else I can do? I thought about soaking his bum in some epsion salts in a warm bath . I feel so bad for him . What should I do?
Maybe you should take your dog to your vet and get one of those things put around his neck. I can't remember what it's called, but it's supposed to keep the dog or cat from biting his stitches and stuff off. It looks like a big parabolic antenna on the dog. lol. It's a bite preventative. I forget what it's called!! Maybe someone else would know?
its called an elizabethan collar or somply an E- collar. give him a benadryl = 1 mg. per pound of body weight. childrens benadryl is 12.5 mgs and adults is 25 mgs. 25 pound dog = 1 adult benadryl if it is just simple irritation from the grooming the benadry will alleviate it. if you don't see any relief from it have the vet check him out. the groomer may not have been able to empty the glands completely.
It sounds as if your groomer was unable to express the anal glands completely. I would agree with people that you need to take your dog to the vet, so he may get the proper attention. If indeed it is impacted anal gland it may lead to an abcess which is painful, and not to mention a messy smell. Giving him benydryl may help but it will only mask the problem that may be lingering to him. Good luck God bless, and give him a stroke for me.
What it is, is she trimmed his bum hair too close. Which you can still do with scizzors. His hairs are poking him. above the anus and his tail they rub and it can be very irritiating. It should grow out enough in about three or four days. Put the e-collar on if he won't leave it alone. Then the ointment may help. My poo goes thru this on occasion. And I try so hard not to over trim that area too.
hi i am a groomer--schnauzers can really plaster their tails down so you can work that area. i always use scissor there-to easy to clipper burn or i feel clippers just cut to close. his tail area may be sore if the groomer pull to hard on his tial, expresses his glands to hard and uses a harsh shampoo that then irritates this area. If it were me i would not had them expresses his glands anymore-let vet do this if he has a problem and ask them to use a very gentle shampoo on this area and use a cream on the area before he leaves the shop
