People say they hold ferrets by their scruffs to trim their toe nails and it makes them go to sleep. And peole say that they do it with their cats. I would never do that, well for the right purposes i would. We used to have a ferret and my dad would hold him by the scruff when clipping his nails .

holding a cat by the scruff is an acceptable form of restraint when we are trying to do things to them at work. it doesn't hurt them , it actually calms some of them down. with ferrets you actually grab the side of them and include their cheek in the hold. if you just grab them by the scruff they can still wiggle that weasely head of theirs and bite you. ferret teeth HURT !!
NO, Scout, you DO NOT EVER grab a ferret by it's cheek. I don't know who told you that, but it's very wrong information. Scruff, scruff, scruff. Yes, it looks painful when you scruff them because it makes a ferret involuntarily yawn. But it's not painful. That's why they have the extra skin on their necks.
Mama ferrets carry their babies around by the scruff, so how could it be wrong?
thats how one of the girls i work with was taught in school. you grab their scruff and some of their cheek and you have way better control of their head then just by scruffing alone. seemed to work pretty well on a wormy ferret the other day and it didn't seem to bother him at all.
