Any tips on how to get a dog to stop barking when people come to the door? My female dog can't get to the door fast enough when she hears someone there! and she barks all the way there until she greets the person and they show her lot's of attention. This wouldn't be so bad but man she has such a peircing bark it goes right through me!! and she will only stop when she wants too and then she starts talking. Any tips out there to stop this behavior? I tried the water bottle but unless I am at the door before her then it doesn't work and I really don't want to use one of the barking colars as she is going to have puppies in 3 weeks so that is out of the ? so what do I do? Help!!!!
I finally purchased a citronella bark collar. It sprays the citronella outward when they bark. Works with the vibration on their throat. It works great. All they have to do is see it and that's enough. Got in through RC Steele and Company
at the door put on her leash. then when she goes wild hold the leash up so it is taut, but not to strangle her. just so it is tight and pulls on her collar some. that serves to help a dog calm itself. not so tight that she wheezes or chokes, just so she knows something happened. when she is quiet let loose a little and if she starts again tighten it up. have her sit to be petted by the people.
i dont inderstand why you would want yor dog to bark when some one come to your house . its good because your dog tells you when someone has enteredyour house. i would let my dog bark anytimes someone has enterd the house.
i tried the citronella collar on my chow mix. it didn't work. he barked, then stopped and smelled the air when it sprayed. then he barked again to smell it. and then i guess the smell didn't bother him so he kept on barking. any other suggestions would be very helpful. he barks all the time not just when people come over. then he has this high pitched squeal almost like a husky's. very nerve wracking !
Oh my god scout one thats hilarious!!! Or I heard of the westie that would run really fast around the house barking so the spray would blow past him and would run out of citrunella. Dogs aren't stupid! well some are....The barking issue can be delt like this. You'll need three people, one person to knock on you door, one person with the treats, and one person to get up and answer the door....One person go on the outside of the door and wait. Second person wait on the inside by the door with a handful of treats, and the third person should be on the couch waiting for the knock on the door. Person on the outside of the door knocks, dog goes crazy and runs to the door, person waiting on the inside of the door tell the dog to sit and start giving the treats, one by one quickly, mean while the person on the couch has gotten up and answers the door strange person comes in, pup still getting treats. Hopefully eventually if you do it enough times(min 10-20times) he will just run to the door and wait for his treats so keep the treats by the door in a candy bowl. Why bark when you could get treats for not barking.... hope that works
sue the westie story is even funnier. i could try that with people coming ove but then what do i do about the neighbors shutting the doors to their house, the computer modem dialing up, my husbands car turning the corner 2 blocks away, or the leaves blowing down the street? he barks at everything !!! he has an extrordinary sense of hearing and if we had pins in the house he would probably bark at them dropping lol !
I don't mind the dog's barking to let me know there is someone at the door but it is after the fact when the people are trying to get in that bothers me they just won't stop barking until they are ready .I just would like some control over them . I can't talk to people at the door because like scout1 my female has a very high pitched bark! and it is nerve wracking! I sometimes don't even like to come home because of the barking they just go nut's like they never seen people before! and boy when the buses start going by I have to have them in the house or they would be trying to greet every bus thinking the kids are on them and when their bus does come if I don'e have a hold of them they are gone to greet the kids .One day my female went right on the bus!! But I did do the leash thing yesturday when the kids and my husband came home plus a water bottle and you know it worked (no barking!!!)so I think I will try this for a while and see what happens .It is all my fault I let them get away with doing this from the time they were pups but not a mistake I would do again. Thanks guy's ,Lisa
