OMG! You're gonna make me cry. Your dog looks exactly like my Snickers I had to sell :( She was a longcoat though, but her coat wasn't that long. More just longer on her tail and ears and tail like a fox. She was a pound and a half. They're gorgeous! I'm biased, but still. hehe :)

we have a client where i work who breeds chi's. she just had a litter, the female was 4 pounds and had 5 puppies. she is on calcium injections daily because the pups are just sucking the life out of her.

wow 5 pups to a 4 lb doggie.. That is alot of milk for a small dog..

yeah it is a lot of puppies. this particular dog always has large litters and has problems with her calcium levels each time she has pups. the thing i find most amazing is she always delivers naturally. she has never had to have a c-section.

You have gotten some good information from other posters. My advice is to just go ahead and have her spayed and let her be your pet. I hear a lot of people say they have friends and family that say they "want one just like her"...trouble is...the puppies will more than likely be not just like her. And the people may disappear when the litter comes. I would suggest pointing your friends/family in the direction of Chihuahua rescue instead of breeding more pets. Responsible breeding involves showing your dogs to determine how they stack up to the breed standard, only breeding the best TO the best, and performing all relevant health tests. (ane more) You sound like a very intelligent, responsible person; but please remember there are many Chis looking for homes already, that unless your bitch is an exemplary example of the breed and you have shown her to her championship, she is of appropriate size, and she has something to offer the breed that is currently lacking....then she really does not need to be bred. I am sure there are many very sweet, cute Chis in rescue that need homes. Please send your friends there. In addition, each heat cycle your bitch goes through, increases the odds of her developing mammary cancer later on. If you spay her now, you will cut those odds significantly. I forget the exact figure, but something like 80% of all dogs AKC registered each year come from one time breeders who thought that their one little litter wouldn't make a difference. Puppy mills account for actually a much smaller percentage of the dogs out there, and responsibly bred dogs from show/performance breeders, EVEN LESS.
