Hello everyone. I need some help and advise. I have a 2 and a half year old Pure Breed Lab and I cannot get her to breed with her mate! I tried holding her but she goes phyco! I need help! I think she hates males lol.
(If you are wondering why my dog is not "Fixed" - and know alot of people are touchy on this subject - its because she is a Show dog. Alot of CkC dogs shows do not allow "fixed" animals)
Well I'm certainly not a breeder and I've never heard of anyone having that problem.... So I'm sorry. I was going to tell you to just fix her, but I guess you won't do that. I just wanted to say welcome to the forum.
Well, I have heard of it. My female schnazer was even took to the breeder and left for a few days because she wanted one of her puppies. She would growl if a male even looked her way. I finally, which I'm glad I did, had her spayed. I had never heard of it either until with her. My other female which is also spayed, would have had puppies, but she, I felt was to little to have any, and I was afraid to breed her.
For one, are you sure she is even receptive to males? There is a small window of time that the female will accept males, and if you are to early or to late you are not getting anyway. I suggest a vet visist for some vaginal cytology and pegesterone tests.
Also, some bitches do not care for the dog that you chose and that can be a problem.
Also, some girls are not mentaly ready to have puppies yet. If they are unwilling to breed when still so young (2 and a half is young) then you need to wait or you may have a litter of mauled or abandoned puppies.
Faye_Girly - She has been in heat for about 2 weeks.
True_Pits - Why I am asking around in this forum for info is because I live out in the country and I am no where near the shows right now. I cannot show her when she is in heat. It gets messy. I have looked and talked to people I know but they have little advise so I am seeking for more info and suggestions....
IcyHound - I think she hates males lol. I think she is ready to have a litter. She is fully mentally aware.
Basset_Lover - My dog is a conformation show dog. I go to show in Vancouver, Abbottsford, New Westminstrer. I also show out of province like Alberta. I love my dog =) She is sooo pretty. I won first a couple of times now!
I just don't know why she wont breed. She was get intrested with males, but ever since she has gone into heat she does not care for them. I have never heard of this problem.
Maybe thats the problem ... The stud I am using is one of my Dogs. (I have 3 Labs - Clair (my old spayed lab) - Maximus - My intact Male - And Kooma the one I am trying to breed) She has knowen him for awhile .. maybe she wants a male she doen't know?
Kooma, how much do you know about breeding, anyway? Are you sure it's for you? Don't get offended, but you might want to reconsider breeding until you know a little more. What testing have you done on both dogs? An experienced breeder will tell you that mating doesn't always happen when YOU want it to. As icy said, there is a small window when a female will accept a male and as far as making choices, dogs aren't really very picky when it comes to "who they like". If its the right time, its the right time and if its the wong time, its the wrong time. Personality doesn't play a big part in it, so I've heard. But I don't breed so I don't pretent to know, I'm just going by what I've heard from some of the excellent dog people on this site. If I wanted to breed, I wound find someone who is experienced and have them mentor me .
Are you floating yet? Wouldn't be so bad but you keep sending that awful weather east, we may not be able to float but the winter canals of Holland have nothing on Central Alberta roads right now.
I assume you have x-rayed and CERFed your dogs or you wouldn't be at this point right now. If you haven't I'd seriously consider doing so. I was party to a conversation just before Christmas where someone who had not was told that one of the Lab puppies they had produced was severely dysplastic. Sure had egg on their face, to say nothing of the dog and the 19 others that pair had produced in 2 years.
I agree that a swab at the very least would be in order, and preferably a hormone level. Dogs normally stand between the 10th and the 13th day but I have seen everything from the 5th day to the 18th day to the 9th day of the second heat 30 days after the end of the first heat.
She may not be ready, or past ready. She may have a persistant hymen. Your other female may be the Alpha in the pack and the younger one will not breed because she is subordinate. He may not be mature, or he may be too enthusiastic. Rookie nookie sometimes just plain doesn't work. Some girls are shy, some males bashful, and while by reputation Labs are usually only too cooperative, some breeds, have to be "in love" before they will even think about it.

It sounds as if you are in the Canadian Kennel Club correct? People see CKC here and sometimes assume it's the Continental KC. If you touch her beside her tail does she flag her tail to that side. If not, she's not ready. You don't want your male to "connect" and have her bolt on him. That could cause real problems. You might also look into live insemenation at your vet.
