What time of the day is best to train a puppy? My dog is almost six months and has a really short attention span. I haven't done much training with him yet because I can't decide when to do it. What time of the day would be the best?
first, do you stay at home? i used to take mine out about mid morning or just in the house and start with simple training, i used the clicker training method and it worked great. if your pet is 6 months old, it is ready for training or he will be training you. there's a great book called "mothers know best" benjamin is the author, last name, can't rememeber her first. i bought it on amazon, but borders usually have it. great book, works well. at least 15 to 20 minutes at a time to do training, they really do have a short attention span. have you considered obeidance classes? this is a great way to get them started and they usually have steps, kindergarten, elementary, and so on until you feel your pet is learning and knows that you are the one in charge. what type of pet do you have?
my dog doesn't have a short attention span but gets bored with repetition. she feels that if shes done it twice there is no reason to do it and is sometimes baffled why i keep asking. i have found that instead of settinf up a time each day to work with her i work with her throughout the day. if i am siiting down and she comes over i'll tell her sit. maybe i'll tell her to down and then stay. out of the blue i'll just tell her to come. i have found she is much more willing to respond when i just throw commands out randomly then making her do the same things over and over for a specific amount of time.
i'd say definitely do it in the morning, and do it more than once per day. have other times afternoon and evening, or once in morning and twice in evening if you work. if she has a short attention span keep the sessions short and more frequent. try 5 minutes 3 times per day. if that goes okay and she doesn't lose interest them try 10 minutes 3 times per day. keep training positive and fun and active for her. keep your voice happy and excited and use lots of praise.
scout1, I find my dog ressponds to me the same way. She is very smart and didnt take her a long time to respond to certain commands , sit, stay, lets go, heel, go potty and she loves to give 5. I do kind of have a routine of walking her every morning to the park which is about 1/4 mile from the house. She is only 4 months old and now have her for 8 weeks. When i got her the temperture was real cold, and being so young i just kept her inside for about 2 to 3 weeks. Once i started taking her out i started obedience training her.Thats when i found out real fast that she responds to commands but after 2 to 3 times gets bored doing the same thing.Changing my method to randomly giving her commands thru out the day rather than take time out to train her in a certain time frame ,resulted in my dog wanting to please me and obeying anytime i give her i command.
