We're gone a coupla times a week for around 6.5 hours. Our basenji, Magnum, does great when he's got things to keep him busy. For example, filled kongs, raw beef knucklebones (per his breeder), toys. Any other ideas you can give would really be appreciated!
I keep my rocket-up-the-ass little, almost 3mos, monster home alone about 3 times a week for 6 something hours, I leave him in the kitchen....i hide a few cookies, carrots apples around, like under his bed, behind the table leg.etc.....and a puppy kong, all his sqeeky toys, and some classical music in the backround. Oh and a wee wee pad...which you dont need. Try hiding food around the room...maybe leave the TV on. something besides silence....that drives them nuts. Oh and when I get home, I take Logan to play in the yard minimum half hour, usually his puppy friends are there so I just sit and enjoy....
You gotta take them for walks after being left alone, its a must...if your dog is 1...I would take him for a mile run or so.
oh i just got a better idea....If your dog has a high prey drive, there is a new toy on the market. Its a mouse, that has a motion sensor in it. when its not touched it lies still, but as soon as dog/cat touches it or sniffs it the thing jumps and lights come on...it rolls around and makes a lot of sqeeky noises. then if left alone for a few minutes it is still..well you get the point. I got this toy for my overweight 20lbs cat...and a crazy skinny cat, never looked back since. I think you cand find it in PETCO or Petsmart.
My puppy pretends to know how to herd turkeys... seriously, he has an enclosed escape proof area with barn access. I realize this isn't an everyday situation. Herding may be an incorrect description though...more of turkey chasing puppy. Really cute, wears him out...thankfully. Previously, I purposely selected dog breeds that tended to be quiet in the house. Worked for me...might have been breed, training or luck. Sorry I did not answer your question. e
I bought my dogs one of those video's that the dogs are supposed to watch, but they really weren't interested, but mabe yours would be. It is called Dog Sitter, but there may be other ones around. Usually I fill those hollow bones with yogurt(plain) and friut(real) and freeze it, this can keep them busy for a while and by the time they are done they are exhausted and just sleep till I come back. Mind you, I've never video taped them while I was gone, so who knows, mabe there not just sleeping.

i dont do anyhting special. when i leave salty goes in her crate and i try to find a bone to put in with her in case she does get bored. but mainly all they do is sleep all day. lazy bum dogs !!!lol. i have prolly said it before but magnum is very handsome boy.
logan is adorable !!!! those thick legs and huge feet.....he is going ot be a big boy .
he is already 23lbs and not even 3 months old...the vet said he will be minimum 120 lbs, but i dont want it to be problematic for his joints. I guess we'll see what happens. I plan on starting him on the preventative route...shark cartilage. He OFA good, three generations down on both the dams and the sires sides. so thats a little relief. but still i will do anything and everything in my power to prevent him from geting arthritis of dysplasia.
I've heard Basenji's are quite the sweet busy bodys that like to climb! LOL! Welcome to TP! :) I agree with the Kongs stuffed with treats, hiding toys & treats to find as well as classical music or as in my dogs case .....opera.... is the fav! I also switch to talk radio or the TV. Good luck & what a cutie by the way! :)
Hey I am new here. Umm well i have a Border Collie named "Chloe". Shes pretty good when I am at school, but I give her a bone before I leave. Also I need some help. There is a cat across the road, how do I stop her from barking at it.
Beau and Arwen now have the run, with toys, kiddie pool and trees to lie under and (for beau) to pee on with thier "coll-a-roo" beds out there. They can get onto the screened porch and into the house. I leave the tv on set on a music station (they seem to like classic rock~grin).
Other than playing, let's climb all over mom's furniture (which is a No-No), they pretty much do what Pyrs do best, lie around.
