All the windows around my house are covered with aluminum awnings. Every spring they each get a family of birds...NOISY birds, that make the dog go crazy. He tore the blinds down from one window while trying to get to them. They scratch around, squawk (not sing), and wake me up every morning at 5 am. That's too early!
Is there some type of repellent I can use? I tried putting up a plastic owl but they just laughed at it.
When you find out, let me know. I can't even hang hanging baskets out on our patio anymore. They build nests and soon as the little ones come out of the nest the dogs are waiting. Between the squirrels and birds I just give up.
I don't have any personal experience with it, but I noticed a lot of stores put replicas of owls above the entrance. I believe every WalMart in my area has a couple on the edge of the roof above the doors. I theory birds has an instinctual fear of owls and other birds of pray, so they'll stay away from them. Might want to try it.
I also heard of filling plastic bottles with water and hanging it out the window. The glare supposed to drive them away.
I'll send my puppy over lol, he chases all the birds away, and deer! The birds know better now than to sit in my yard, instead they sit where they know he won't go, (on the other side of the invisible fence), smart little critters.
Maybe put a bird feeder somewhere away from your house, so they will go there to eat.
On my uncle's farm he used to hang bars of soap on the trees so the dear and other animals wouldn't eat the fruit, not sure if that would work for birds, but just a suggestion.

I don't know of any repellent but I guess you look for some somewhere. When they drive me crazy (when alot are in a tree, making noise), I clap my hands or my brother sets of a firecracker or bottle rocket. ha! they'll get the picture. Sophie chases birds away out of the yard and porch, they poop everywhere. ugh..
If the birds are building nests in the awnings, try chicken wire in the crevices.. We had to have our house Pigeon proofed.. We covered all the crevices where the pigeons would sit and build nests with chicken wire. It does the trick! :)
I guess I'll try chicken wire next. The plastic owl isn't working.
I tore down the nest as soon as they built it, but every morning they come back and raise havok. I felt bad about it but I was desperate to get some sleep. I'll beat on the window and they go away for a while, but five minutes later they're right back.
Last year I left the nest up and had six baby birds sqawking at the top of their lungs every morning, practically right next to my bed. Can you imagine trying to get an extra couple hours of sleep and dealing with that?
There is another more drastic way you can try, but you probably wouldn’t want to go that far. You can mix some bird food with rat poison and feed it to them. That should do the job. It is probably illegal though, so you might get in trouble when the neighbors will start to notice dead birds everywhere and trace them back to you.
Personally, I would just get some ear plugs and use them when I want to get these couple of hours of extra sleep. Think of it this way. The more birds out there, the fewer bugs there are in your back yard.
Forget the owl, that doesnt help. We had a pigeon living over our front door, leaving a huge pile of poop right at the front door every day. We bought this stuff called Tanglefoot bird repellent. Its a sticy substance that adheres to surfaces and they dont like to walk on it and it worked. Lars (my children named him, he was there so long) went away to annoy someone else.
Can anybody recommend a good product to repel rabbits? They're lining up for brunch every day in my garden!
A feeder won't work because they're nesting...unless they build a nest in the feeder. I'm not going to kill them. I'll try the chicken wire and or the sticky stuff. Hopefully they wont come back this year because it's about time for them to lay eggs.
Oh, I don't want to kill them or the squirrels either. I just want them to build their nests somewhere else other than my hanging baskets. Someone told me to put rocks in the bottom of the baskets and they would not build nests. Well, that didn't work anymore than the owl thing. We have a hanging owl plus a hanging cat with a bird feeder in its mouth. (no feed of coarse) But, that doesn't scare them either. I just don't want the dogs to get the little ones when they come out of the nests.
My grandparents used to have the same problem with birds. Every evening they would come by the hundreds and land in their trees. They were ruining the grass from all the poop. The owl didn't work for them either. Papaw finally got a bee-bee gun. He didn't shoot the birds, but shot into the air away from the trees. The loud sound would scare them off. He had to do it a couple of times, but eventually they didn't come back any more. They would launch themselves on the fence across the road!
I went over someone's house a few years ago and noticed about 10 CDs hanging up from the roof on the verandah. Apparently they had birds constantly sitting on the outdoor table and pooing all over it until they put the CDs up. The birds were scared of the shiny, spinning circles and stopped going in the yard. Maybe this will work?
