I brought my puppy to the vet yesterday and she is almost 6 months old and she got her last booster which was the parvo, so brought her home and I put her in hrt crate, and left for a little while. I came home about a half hhour after and her little eyes were swollen shut and she was itching like crazy and she had red marks all over her body and she was broken out in hives, I felt so bad because she had a reaction to the shot, she was also crying so I called the vet and they said to bring her in right away because they gave her a injection of Benadryl something to bring the swelling down because she was itching so much she was making herself bleed so I gave her a bath to calm her down and then it finally stop bothering her. they told me if she doesn;t improve to give her a tablet are liquid bendryl, but she seemed fine. Well she when she got her rabies and her shots she had a reaction to that to what causes this does anyone know and do they still give the dogs shots? Does alot of dogs have this problem?
Which shots did she have today? Was it the DHLPP or just a parvovirus vaccine with nothing else? the DHLPP vaccine has a component for Leptospirosis, and that one in particular is known to cause a LOT of adverse reactions.

My dog had a reaction to the DHLPP. So when she needed her next set, the gave her the one without the Leptospirosis. They also gave her a benydryl shot before hand and then we went in the next day for her Rabies. When it came for her booster shots this spring, we did it the same way and she didn't have any problems.
I've also heard of lepto being the culprit. Sounds like your dog had a pretty severe reaction. Most dogs don't have a reaction and if they do its mild. Giving benedryl prior to giving the shot definitely will help. Just make sure if you ever change vets to let them know ahead of time they may want to keep the dog for an hour or so afterwards to monitor them.
My Pekingese Fancy had an allergic reaction to her vaccinations when she was a puppy her eyes-face swelled and she got hives she was also given Bendadryl and has had to have Benadryl before any vaccinations since. She is also allergic to a number of other things too. She cannot tolerate grains of almost any kind she loses her hair and itches like crazy she is so allergic that shes even allergic to some grasses. We tried all sorts of allergy medicnes/remedies and nothing ever really helped. Since she has been on a natural/raw diet she is doing much better although she does have to be bathed in a special shampoo and is allowed no store bought treats of any kind. The next time your dog is vaccinated I would give her a dose of Benadryl about an hour before it really helps!
