Dogs male or female, shouldnt' be bred before they are 2 years old minimum.

They should also be tested for inherent issues, not sure what breed of dog you have but you should be sure it is free of hereditary issues.

The AKC told me 8 months for a stud.

For the bigger boys and girls...ie..Mastiffs, Newfoundlands, Rottweilers, Borzoi, Bloodhounds..etc, etc I personally would wait a minimum of 2.5 years. Some of the biggest ones, especially males aren't even fully mature till 3 years old in some cases. Regardless of size and or breed 2 years SHOULD, in my opinion be the absolute minimum. By that age hopefully(but unfortunately) any genetic "shortcomings" may have become apparent. That being said I'm not a breeder, scientist or involved in any aspect of veterinary medicine.

I know the AKC and others think differently that is just my opinion and do not mean to offend anyone. e

Why is it the males should wait for 2 years? I know females should because they are not as good of mothers when they are younger and they aren't ready, but why boys? Just curious.

If a dog is less than 2 years- they are not old enough to know what health problems they may have (and hand down to their pups). Most health tests can't be done into 2 years as well. THAT'S why.
