I bought Rexall Flax, Fish, & Borage Oil softgels at Walmart. They were out of the oil form. Since it is a human product, should I give my lab puppy 1 softgel every other day? Also, should I cut open the softgel and pour it into her dog food or should I get her to swallow the softgel?
My chocolate lab puppy so far is doing well on her supplement softgel of Flaxseed Oil, Borage Oil, and Fish Oil. She will get this supplement every other day unless she gets at some point diarrhea. If that happens then I'll give it to her twice a week. My pup just loves the taste of the fish oil. I think the best way for me to get her to take the whole softgel without losing much of the oil is by putting it into a small amount of canned food. I give her anyways 1/3-1/2 cup of canned food sometimes as a special treat in addition to her dry puppy food.
My puppy is 20 weeks old. She is quite healthy, but had some itching and slight dandruff. Yes, I also heard that you're really not supposed to supplement a puppy, let alone an adult dog since they can get too many vitamins, minerals, etc. I tried bathing her several times in hopes that she wouldn't scratch. Perhaps, it's just a dog thing! I really don't know. All I know is that I heard that a little oil added to the diet can sometimes help. I started putting a 1/2 tsp of olive oil in her dry food. In a matter of days of doing so, her scratching was less and her fur looked shinier and felt softer. I heard on the forum here that others were also giving their puppies and adult dogs flax and fish oil supplements instead of the olive oil. Someone advised me that olive oil can put delays in a puppy blowing their puppy coat to adult, as well as, cause delays for their undercoat. That is when I decided to change to the flax, fish, and borage oils combined supplement. Combined together they are excellent for their skin and coat, nails, and even their heart. I think the decision I made was correct. My puppy is very healthy looking and to be honest really loves the taste of the fish oil. As long as it isn't causing her health problems, I plan to continue with the supplement. I guess she'll be the healthiest one in my family! Now it's a different story if it starts to make her sick. Afterall, she is very precious to me and my family and we love her very much. To think that we've only had her for 2 months and she's like a baby to us.
