I was wanting to know when is the right age to give a treat to pupies? I have a miniture schnauzer (2yo) and I really do not remember what age I gave her rawhides and chewy treats? My cousin bought a Miniture Schnauzer and she is doing everyting according to the vet. I was just wanting to know you guys opionins. I figured if they have teeth and the treat is not something to get choked on the any age is ok. please let me know what is the best age and type . I have tried everything from store brand to greenies. My sasha is not picky but I would like to gve her the best type for her breed
I have a miniature schnauzer puppy as well. He just turned 4 months old. As far as treats go, I give him tiny bits of shaved deli meat, like pork roast or turkey, instead of store bought treats which tend not to be very good as well as nutrients go. He also likes fruit and veggies, so often his treats are carrots or bits of apple and sometimes bits of raspberries or peaches . Plus, I didn't want to mess with his diet much. Although I did by a box of Old Mother Hubbard treats because they are the company that makes his food, Wellness. He gets those treats much less often than the deli meat. He really wasn't interested in any treats until about 2.5 to 3 months old. I also use nylabones but for rawhides, instead of the usual tough pig ears or rawhide bone, I give him lamb ears which are much much softer and easier for him to chew on. Since they are such small dogs they don't need the real tough rawhides, in my opinion at least.
I'm not sure if this was much help but I think it sometimes is good just to hear what others are doing.
Treats can be given at any age - Iams Puppy Bisquits are good for puppies because they are kind of soft. Don't overdo, though, as they will get fat if fed too many treats. CARROTS are GREAT!!! And if you start giving them to a puppy when they are young, they will love them. Angel gets a small carrot a day (she's tiny - 4 1/2 pounds). I've tried giving my older dog carrots and she wants nothing to do with them because she was not introduced to them as a puppy (she is a rescue dog) so her former owner obviously didn't give them to her. I NEVER give rawhide - heard too many bad things about give dogs rawhide - pig ears are a great treat and dogs love them, but if you have more than one dog - watch them, because for some reason, they get very possessive with those things!!!!
