We are paper training our 8 week-old puppy. Results have been good so far but he licks at his urine and feces after he "goes". It's kinda grossing me out and I'm sure its not healthy - I want him to stop. Any tips?
Skip paper training. Unless your dog is a tiny one and you live on the third floor in an apartment complex, I personally think paper training is a waste of time, because first you train your dog to go on the paper, and then you train it to go outside. So you're actually potty training him 2 times. Instead, just train it to go outside, it's much less confusing to the dog. Whenever you catch your dog going potty anywhere, grab him up immediately (even if he is still in the act), and take him outside with the leash (ideally keep the leash hanging on the door). Keep him outside until he does something, then offer lots of praise. Keep him on the leash outside until he does his business, and when he is finishing up, say 'hurry up' so he learns to associate the phrase with the deed. Anytime he is in the house, have him under close supervision, or crate him. Crate training is the way to go as far as housetrianing a dog, it makes it much much easier. If you just train him to go outside and skip the paper, you won't have to worry so much about him licking up his pee and poo (which I think is just a dog's natural curiosity, regardless of how gross it is to us).
A lot of dogs do that. THere are things you can give them to stop it, but I don't agree with giving your dogs meds if they aren't sick or don't need it. Your best bet is to immediately pick it up and clean the spot. As far as the rest, go with Minniyar. I have nothiong further on that, she covered it all.
