My son and I have dog allergies. It was suggested to us to have a dog with "human" like hair. Dogs suggested were Shih Tzu, Maltese, Yorkie or Silky Terrier. My son will be 13 in July and wanted a dog since he was little. I would love to own one as well. I also have a 4 yr old daughter. I would like to get a puppy. Does anyone have a suggestion on the dogs listed above or a suggestion of a different type of dog not listed? Also, I'm looking for a breeder in the PA (close to Philly) to purchase from. This will be my first dog so I need all the help I can get! Thanks!!!
If you are severely allergic, I don't suggest a dog. But if it's mild, there are dogs that are good for allergies. Bichon Frises are good for allergies, too. Beware though, that most of those "hypoallergenic" dogs require a lot of grooming.
The AKC lists a number of dogs that may be appropriate for allergy sufferers, mostly because they are 'single' coated dogs instead of double coated breeds. Be aware that no dog is truly hypoallergenic, regardless of what you have heard or read. It may be that you are sensitive to the pet dander, and not so much the hair. Regularly brushing any dog can reduce the amount of dander (and shed hair) to ease allergies. Things like vacuuming daily, using a high quality food with lots of omega-3 fatty acids, or an additive like flax seed oil all can help reduce the amount of skin/hair/dander that your dog will shed, and ease allergies too. The nice thing about this list is there's some 'girly' dogs, and some more 'boyish' dogs so your son doesn't necessarily have to worry about having a frilly little dog. Anyway, the list includes the whippet, basenji, bedlington terrier, bichon frise, chinese crested, irish water spaniel, portuguese water dog, kerry blue terrier, greyhound, italian greyhound, poodle, maltese, soft coated wheaten terrier, schnauzer, and xoloitzcuintli. Of those breeds listed, some require professional grooming, and some are 'wash and wear' dogs that basically can be wiped down with a damp rag. Take a look at these breeds with your son, and pick out some choices that both of you like, then look up breeders from here http://www.akc.org/breeds/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm Those will link you to the national breed club site so you can find reputable breeders that show their dogs and sell dogs that have been health tested and come with a health guarantee. Regardless of who your breeder is, make sure that you take the time to go visit any breeder you are interested in getting a dog from with your son, and take the time to interact for a little while with their dogs, so you can see how or what kind of reaction you both will have, if any.
The person who suggested for you to go to the AKC wesite is totally correct. But there are other websites. If you do a search you will find that they say that within those non-shedding breeds, you still don't know which one is best for your child. Because it has to do with the dogs dander more than the hair/fur. So it depends on your child and his reaction. Because they do not list some non-shedding breeds as hypoalergenic (ex: scottish terrier and bouvier de flanders). I hope this helps.
My allergies to dogs are life threatning, and I live with three. Only one is hypoallergenic. I take Singulair, and it almost completley stops any allergic reaction I have to the dander. Try getting you and your son on Sungulair, it is the best medicine, then you will most likley be able to have any dog you want. Personally, I do suggest you get a hypoallergenic breed, just to be on the safe side. The American Hairless Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Bichon Frise, Bichon/Yorkie, Bolognese, Cairn Terrier, Hairless Chinese Crested, Chi-Poo, Chippiparia, Coton de Tulear, Havanese, Lowchen, Maltese, Malti-Poo, Miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Shichon, Toy Poodle, West Highland White Terrier, Wirehaired Fox Terrier, Mexican Hairless, or Yorkshire Terrier, would all be very good choices for you. Any of these wonderful breeds would be perfect for you guys, but I also suggest Singulair. You will be around other dogs, especially when you have one of your own. All the breeds I listed are perfect for first time dog owners. Oh, well, I didn't see that you had a four year old daughter too. In that case, only consider the American Hairless Terrier, Bichon Frise, Bichon/Yorkie, Cairn Terrier, Hairless Chinese Crested, Coton de Tulear, Havanese, Lowchen, Miniature Schnauzer, Shichon, and Mexican Hairless. The others are not good with small children. Let me know what breed you want, and I may be able to put you in contact with a breeder. None of the dogs that you listed would good in your situation. Just let me know what breed, and I will probably be able to find a breeder for you. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help. Good luck!
That's because scottish terriers and Bouvier de flandres aren't no-shed. I have a friend with bouviers and they leave tufts of steel grey hair all over the place when we go to conformation classes. And Scotties and Westies do shed.
Hiya...For allergies there are several other ways to help you and your son out. There are not only the AKC types of dogs listed on the websites and the short haired, and the many other types of "acceptable" dogs. You can also do things like Hepa Filters for your heater/Air conditioner which removes 99% of circulated dander and such. There are also portable room circulation fans which remove allergins...I have several clients who are allergic to cats and fine hair and since purchasing the unit they have it has made remarkeable changes in their health. Do your research...if you want to keep animals there is always a way without having to go to extremes.
