My Dal has somehow knocked out his lower fang...the large one next to the little ones at the front (canine?). I'm not happy....he's lost a knuckle on his toe AND an adult tooth this week....and his balls!!! Will losing this tooth hinder him in any way?
http://www.uspcak9.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=medical;action=display;num=126 This is a link I found to another message board. It's long and a little off topic because it talks about implants, so I'l sum it up. They basically say that the teeth wil shift to compensate for the missing tooth (and I'm thinking if it fell out at such a young age, there's a better chacne it's true) and it won't be a big deal.
Boxer Babe, it doesn't sound emergent, but on Monday, I'd call the vet and let him know. He may want to check the gum line for any underlying pathology...but sometimes, puppies just lose a tooth. Just refrain from any kind of tug of war games that could damage the teeth, since a dog's teeth don't "set" until later in puppyhood.
Are you positive it was an adult tooth? Just from his age alone, I strongly suspect it was a puppy tooth. You can tell the difference when you look at the dog's mouth or at the tooth. Puppy teeth are extremely sharp, and a greyish white color. Adult teeth are WHITE. I mean, nearly paper white. Obscenely white, compared to the puppy teeth. It would look gigantic compared to the puppy tooth, I'm talking like more than an inch long. Puppy tooth would probably be about 1/3 of an inch long. My dog is about dalmatian size, and that's how big his adult canines are.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. My dal lost her canine teeth this week. (the baby ones) Your boy has had such a bad week I hope it wasn't an adult tooth. I have seen the canines break off of older dogs.
Yeah I've never heard of a dog completley losing an adult tooth. I have heard of chipped or broken ones, but the rest of the tooth would still be there. If the *whole* tooth was pulled out, it'd be similar to a human loosing their tooth, blood everywhere and a huge bloody root at the bottom of the tooth.
My boy's in the wars that's for sure! He just needs to slow down a bit I think....doesn't help that we can't really exercise him with his stitches and bandage on his foot -- still does speedy laps of the yard though...hasn't seemed to hinder him one bit! I hope it was a baby tooth....Now I'm not sure if it was an adult tooth -- his other one is about 1/3 inch long so it's possibly a baby tooth. And we didn't see any blood or find the tooth -- just noticed a little red mark on his gums where the tooth was. He lost a few along the front and he now has adult ones there....do the canines fall out a bit later than those front ones? Does anyone know the order of losing teeth when teething?
Oh thank you, thank you, thank you Minniyar! I feel so relieved....I didn't want him to have a tooth missing at such a young age....poor thing already lost his toe knuckle and then that the tooth happened and I was thinking "what is he going to do next"!!! It feels good to know he hasn't hurt himself again! Maybe he's not so crazy after all!:)
