I am looking for a dog for my mentally disabled little brother and he likes Beagles and Jack Russell's but I think they are too active and no one is home during normal working hours. Does anyone know what bulldogs are like -- ie affection, temperament, playfullness, exercise level etc, barking? He really likes dogs that play games like throwing and catching balls etc in the yard...would a bulldog suit?
does your brother need a service dog? if that's the case then a lab or a golden would be perfect. they love to play and learn very quickly. they are wonderful dogs. but if he just wants a loving compianion then, (besides the other two breeds i mentioned) an english setter might be a good choice. they love to play...and they love to cuddle. :) here's a good site in pennsylvania www.englishsetterrescue.org ....if your not from penn then check out petsfinder.com...its a great site :) hope it helps! :)
Thank you everyone. No SM, he didn't like the cairn terrier...I did though (the little girl coming back in me!) so I was like "Come on Jason...you can have a Wizard of Oz dog"....but it didn't work. He likes bulldogs though. However, my mum and dad had a cavilear (?) king charles and it had legs problems and didn't really play and Jase really didn't think much of it...paid no attention to it whatsoever. But my sister's Pomeranian is living there and he is realllly playful and Jason loooves him. So I might further investigate if bulldogs like ball games etc. And he didn't like the English Setter either. He's a hard man to please -- but at least he knows what he likes! :)
I think it would be a good idea, though there are probably better choices. Keep looking at breeds. I like bulldogs, they are low maintenace and seem the type to want to play and get love. Here's the link to their breed club: http://thebca.org/index.html
I think a Bulldog would be great! But, I can't picture a Bulldog running around and playing fetch. Try going for something along the lines as an Australian Shepherd. Bulldogs play, but get tired very quickly. Bearded Collies love to play! If your brother needs a service dog, then get a Collie or a Boxer. I hope this helps. You might even want to go with a Samoyed or a Pointer. There are even better choices! The Siberian Husky is a wonderful dog!
I have known a few bulldogs. They did love to play fetch. The can't do it all day long. The are snuggle bugs. They can't swim, either. They can have a lot of health problems. Check out your breeder carefully. I would definately have this breed fixed. They ussually require a c-section to give birth. Maybe a bull terrier? They are a "guy" looking dog. They have more energy, too. This breed with need good socialization and good training, though.
Not sure bulldog is the best choice..they aren't the best fetchers. I definately agree with thinking about a Boston Terrier..related to the bulldog but more active and very easy to train. They are more flexible and tend to have fewer breathing problems than the pug or bulldog. Of course, I may just be partial..;)
I own an english bulldog, and he does play fetch, but only for about 15mins at the most. They are very high maintence (skin, stomach, attitude problems) dogs and not the best for the first time dog owner due to their stubbornness. I, as a bulldog owner don't suggest that kind of dog for him.
