I am reposting this because I didn't get a response... and I want one!!! :)
Beulah likes to chew/suck on pillows and blankets. She does not chew shoes or other things. (she is 18 months old, lab mix) I have bought her many stuffed animals as those are her favorite thing to play with but this sucking on my blankets is driving me crazy!!
She lies in bed with us and is doing one of two things: licking the sheets and causing the hugest puddle, (soaking down to the mattress) or she is sucking on the edge of the blankets until they get soaked. Sometimes she chews and pulls the edge of the blanket apart, but sometimes it is just sucking.
Any suggestions? I have been shoving one of her stuffed toys in her face so she knows to chew on those instead, but now I think I may just be confusing her. I tell her no and pull the blanket away from her about 100 times, but I swear she doesn't even know she is doing it. Like a kid sucking his thumb. Maybe it's a comfort thing?
Should I put something really gross tasting on the blanket? Keep in mind, I SLEEP in that bed! I thought about getting her a "woobie" (like from Mr. Mom) to suck on, but would that confuse her? Like she can suck on one blanket but not all the others?
I don't know what to tell you about the sucking...but my Mom had a problem with her dog chewing on shoes...so she went out and bought him his own shoes to chew on. He never got confused about it...just tore them shoes up! She would go buy him more every time he went through both of them (she'd give him one at a a time) so maybe a blanket that belongs to your dog would be okay. Mine has one! She also has her own pillow and stuffed toys.
I was wondering about my dog chewing up shoes. My mom told me to go get him a pair of shoes he could chew up however I think it would teach him it is OK to chew up shoes. The funny thing is I think if I got him a cheap pair of shoes he wouldnt have anything to do with them, he seems to only like the expensive ones!
ia'm so glad you ask this question, b/c teacup my chi/ sucks on his bear ms.pooky nose.and end up going too sleep, while sucking, i thought maybe he miss his mom ,but he's still doing it at 6mo.i just said well maybe he will grow out of it . i thought i was the only one with this problem.and if i take ms.pooky from him he starts crying running all over the house looking for her .so i just give it to him.not only that he takes his paws and seems as if he holding her down digging his claws into her .not saying everything else he does to her,i hope nothing ever happen to pooky , i will have to go buy another one.as soon as we come in from our walk first thing he does is go find ms.pooky,'' beats me '' any answer's for this behavior, i would like to know also.
oh my gosh, me and husband have been discussing this very topic. Our 18 month old dog has been doing this exact same thing. Our best guess is that it serves as his security blanket(the whole sucking the thumb thing). Our couch was once beautiful, now it's adorned wtih schredded, smelly, dog lovin- sucked on couch pillows. If you figure out a remedy we'd love to know.

If shes been doing it for a while she will find it comforting or maybe fun, Labs are orally fixated already, so you need to find apropriate things to chew (not toys or stuffed animals) I mean like bones and chewing things. And rewarding the dog for chewing the right things and just silently removeing the undesirable things may help. Any material objects that are close to blanket material, get rid of it, so there is no confusion about textures.
My girls don't suck or chew on anything, but I know what you mean about the wet spots. Cinnamon will lay on the couch, bed, or chair, and lick until there is a giant wet spot. It's disgusting. I have yet to figure out why she does this. She does have her own stuffed animals that she licks until part of it is soggy and gross. I'm not sure if she's bored, or if my furniture just tastes good! lol Thank God she only does this on occasion.
My little Boston is always slipping into my husband's room to lick large wet spots on the mattress sheet. Now we just need to be sure to keep the bedroom door closed or else my husband gets a wet surprise when he climbs into bed!
Of course Dexter also has his favorite stuffed toys that he suckles until falling asleep.

My Boston terrier has sucked a blanket since I can remember. She at first slept in the bed with me until I noticed the blankets were wet. Then when I realized what she was doing she now has her own bed. She will drag the blankets from her bed to whever I am in the house and lay in the floor and suck her blanket. Gotta love her
