My female dog licks her belly a lot. She was spayed about a month ago And she had puppies before that (a few months)
I don't know if it is related to the spaying. (she is totally healed, not stitch marks, no scars) or if it is more related to the skin being stretched out with the puppies and now maybe the skin shrinking back up itches.
But she licks and licks and lately she has been irritating it and it gets pink after she licks at it.
I don't know, maybe it's just itchy skin from allergies, or something. Maybe it just gets irritated after she licks at it. She has an obsession about licking things.
Can I put cortizone cream on her belly to see if that helps? Suggestions, ideas...??? It's just that spot on her belly. Nowhere else itches her.
My guess - the fur is starting to come back in on her belly about now. This makes them itchy. The healing of the incision site also makes things a bit itchy. While she may be healed outside, it does take a while for their insides to 100% heal. But I'm guessing it's from the fur coming back in.
Keep her mind otherwise occupied. Give her lots of toys and spend some extra time playing games with her. It may partially be a nervous issue as some dogs don't handle the transition from Momma dog to spayed female as easily as others. It's a big jump hormone wise. We have one girl that we let have 2 litters, but she had complications with both so we spayed her. She got a little obsessive about some things for about 2 months after her spay. She got new toys and lots of chew bones and extra cuddling and she was fine.
You know, that makes a lot of sense. At first I was worried about her hormonal issues, but I wasn't sure that I would ever really know if I saw them since I adopted her right after the puppies, so I didn't know her before.
I think you are probably right. She is obsessive about licking things, which is probably related to having no more puppies. I have to wash my bed sheets every few days because she licks and licks until there are literally puddles!!!
Just wanted to ask what kind of dog it is that is having the itchy skin problems. Some breeds are more prone to having itchy skin than others. Our Pit Bull / Shar Pei mix has very sensitive skin. I've only taken her to the groomers once, because they use a blower to dry them and it irritated her skin on her belly so bad, that she was beet red from licking.
You might want to try benedryl (human medicine), it is good at relieving itching (anti-hystimine).
Also, what kind of food are you feeding her now? Some dogs have food allergies.
My dog has very sensitive skin, and is very sensitive to shampoo. I took him to get the puppy special at PetCo the week after I got him. They did a horrible job rinsing him. The groove where his back meets his tail had shampoo or conditioner residue on it. Merphy couldn't walk two feet without screaming, literally. I took him to a different groomer and they showed me what a bad job the other people did. They made sure to rinse him really really good and he was okay after that. Now I make sure that I tell the groomer every single time to rinse him very well. But for the most part, I wash him myself because I know I rinse him well. I've never had a problem with me washing it, but have had several problems with groomers.
He also has allergies which make him itch. My vet told me to give him half a caplet of Benadryl, this helps with itching, sneezing, runny nose, and helps him sleep.
