I have my gsd and my room mates chihauhua as outside dogs, and yes I already know how most of u feel about outside dogs, but mine love being outside and have a shed as their doghouse. But we moved into a new house and they only have run of one side of the house. The other day it rained for 2 days straight, and the dog food that they spilled onto the ground plus the red clay and needless to say my dogs look terrible. But the bad part is the yard back there smells worse than the farm I use to live on. We rack it all up and get rid of all the old food and doggie poo but we cant get rid of that smell. Anyone with any ideas please let me know. My son is back there now tryingto clean up more and poor guy is covered in red clay. Oh and what is good for coverinf up red clay, I need some other kind of ground cover for them, that stuff is terrible. Should I cement it or buy sand or gravel?
OMG! I would love to answer your question for you. But my chi live's inside.I could'nt see keeping him outside b/c they get's so cold they shake's all the time soon as t air hit's them. .......'' YIPE'S''........ ***)@@^^!~~_+)(*&^ OOPS! '' sorry''..... got carry away!
the smell is most likely the clay. our yard is 50% clay, and it stinks to high heaven. when we dug for the fence, i almost needed a gas mask. and forget it if it gets wet, or the dogs roll in it. thats an instant bath. our is more the orange-ey clay but it stinks nonetheless.
I would say its the clay that is holding the odor. Bring them in and let them be house dogs. I cant believe either that you would have a chihuahua be an outside dog, thats terrible, they are inside pets...period.
my dog loves being outside too and she's in the garage some of the time but i've tried getting her inside but my mum will just not allow it but anyway it's not about that my dog is real smelly too at times but i don't know how you get the smell away
You know what I have been on here a while now and I have always said my GSD is an outsde dog, she hates cats and I have 6 of them, she killed 2 of them already, I am not about to let her in. And as I said before the chihauhua is my Roommates dog not mine. He was enver house trained and marks his territory in every spot he can get. Not once have I been rude to any of u, so dont start on me. Its not my dog its hers, he likes being outside with my dog and she takes very good care of him. All I needed was a way to make thier area more clean and less smelly, and since I'm the one that pays for fixing up their area, all I needed was an opinion (sp) on what to do do thier area. And just so you all know, I have 8 kids in my house, who would rather play with thier dogs than do thier homework, so the dogs get plenty of atttention.
Hay I live in Las Vegas Too!! How cool well about the red clay I had some of it in my yard and well now we have a very big back porch. We covered the sucker right up. But we had to put drain piping under the porch because clay dose not drain verv well and could get very bad.
Oh ya here in Vegas it is a nice 80 in the day and 62 at night. My dogs would love to sleep outside but I will not let them. But when I am at work there outside and loving it. If I could be home right now I would be outside TOO.
Starlight, I'am sorry if you thought I was getting on you. it wasn't that at all. here in chicago.we do our dog's a little differen't than pet owner's in Las Vegas maybe b/c the weather is so different. The way you decribe it was the ch/ sleep's out side , they stinks, the smell is horrible, then you started talking about red clay they rolling in. and you wanting some advice on how to get rid of the smell. now since you didn't know I didn't know what to thinkabout that so that's the reason why i said what i said about backing down.but understand my feelings when i heard this. you see my chi/ has his own cage ,chaise lounge chair , a cat tent he adore's, baby blankets.etc i could go on and on .never stays outside without an audult . so we as chi lovers' heard the way your roommate was letting her chi play in stinky red clay.it just something our chi/ are not use to that's all but please accept my apology if you got offend by it. I didn't mean any harm. hope you find a solution for the red stinky clay .may be another member can help you.
