I think it depends on what you want if all you want to do is stick it on your dog and throw the dog in your yard then yes it is cruel, but if you want to actually use it to train the dog then it is no more cruel than using the underground fence. If you were to get the one ith a remote and actually pay attention to when your dog gets shocked then it it a tool not torture
some people have maremmas as family pets then find out there is a problem with barking and use shock collars as a means to keep them quiet ------------------------------------------------------- Its called research. if you dont like barkers, get another breed.
some dogs can't be trained to keep quiet so what do you do if training fails, I know someone who works in a shelter and tells me that so many dogs are abandoned because they bark too much, I would prefer to use a shock collar rather than have the dog put down. I have never needed one as my dogs hardly ever bark but I know that if I had a dog taht wouldnt stop then I would look into trying out these kinds of collars.

my sister used them to keep her boxers from climbing under and over their fence. i myself would not use them on an animal. the idea of shocking a dog seems mean. jmo . but i know of a few humans that the thought of a shock collar on their necks and the contoller in my hands, sounds rather appealing. i wonder if they come in "teenager " size !
The average dog owner has no right owning a shock collar. Unless you've been to a professional trainer who has taught you how to properly use one, I say don't use it. You will do alot more harm than good.
I am not a fan of shock collars, I just think it's not right to shock the dog in any way. There are alternatives, but your family needs to spend time with the dog and get it to know when it shouldn't bark instead of avoiding the issue with a bark collar.
yes I understand that but by useing an underground fence to train them to stay in the yard is not so different than using a shock collar to train them not to bark. But I also put in my post I dont agree with they collars you just put on and leave the dog alone, I feel alot better about the remote style that you actually have to pay attention to your dog to use.
But reguardless I just realized that this thread was started by one of ruby's personalities and has been removed, lol.
