We are getting some quotes for our Home insurance. We currently have insurance, but our deductible is $1000,, WOW. Anyways, I called around and they asked if we had any of the breeds know for biting and I quote ",,Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, etc..." I said " No, they have never bit anyone",,being the smart a** that I am.... They then stopped the quote and said that we were un-insurable due to the dogs we own. I stated that it was illegal to refuse insurance or raise rates due to that fact. He said he does it all the time.
WTF~~ (sorry mods) I think it is ridiculous. If they want to make sure we have proper fencing and shots, etc, they are more than welcome to come over to our house and see it. Just annoys me. I know it is something that I have to live and deal with since we choose to own these "vicious" (ya rite) breeds, but still,,,,GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
My mom ran into this problem when i was a kid. We had a husky/chow mix and the insurance company wanted to cancel the house insurance. We had an adjuster come out to our house and meet the dog. When the poor guy came in he was terrified. I told the dog to sit next to me and he didnt move. Just stared at the guy. The guy said ok and left and we got to keep our insurance. Unfortunalty they do have the right to deny or raise premium rates, because of things like BSL. The "determine" that certain breeds are more likely to bite, or cause more damage if they bite, so they raise the insurance to cover that possibility. Its a load of crap if you ask me but people have to have insurance, so they can get away with it.
Shiggs, it depends on what state you live in. In certain states, it is illegal for home owners insurers to discrimiate or raise prices based on dog breeds you own. You basically would have to get in touch with your state government office or the state better business bureau to know for sure.
I agree it is unfair to charge the differently or charge higher for certain breeds of dogs... but they do it all the time.
They discriminate against other things as well. For example.... they can charge a person with not so great credit more for insurance. If you have no so great credit.... because I have poor credit......I have to pay more.....but I dont make a lot of money... which is why I have poor credit (late payments... not bankruptcy). So... I have to pay almost twice what my friend pays for insurance and we have the same cars... and are the same age. But I have no choice because it is required to have insurance... so I HAVE to pay it. They can "deny" me coverage by charging too much... or requiring a larger down payment than I can afford.
And now ... they dont even cover as much as they used to. I think insurance is a rip off. I know I have paid into it WAY more than I have ever gotten out of it.
Personally, I think if they feel that a breed is so dangerous..... they should just make having them illegal without a wild animal license. The city of Denver has already made owning many breeds of dog within the city limits illegal. Of course.... if you dont get papers on them, who is to say you ever knew that your dog was a pit bull.... you just thought it was a mutt.
Health insurance discriminates for smoking... a perfectly legal activity....why? I am not a smoker... but.... if it is legal....

I have herd of that but I always though it was bull. We have never been asked about dogs. Try state farm thats who we are though they dont ask any questions, they are cheep, and its a great deal,
if i put an out building out side and then burnt down my house and the building I would get over 300K, 145K for the house 100K for anything in my house and 100K for anything that may be in the out building. Minus the 1,000 detuctable.
