I gave a friend of mine a puppy about 10 yrs. ago. Someone recently told me that this person moved out of state and left the dog. I went to get her and she was on a chain so short that she couldn't even stand. Brought her home and bathed her twice, got flea stuff. She had a very hard time walking when I took her out. When she left a bowel movement I noticed small worms so went out and got worm stuff. Put it in soft food and she cried trying to eat. Made gravy and put worm medicine in it and she drank it up. Noticed her tooth is bad and she is also having a hard time walking, like her back legs are weak. Do you think taking her for walks will help to remedy this? Also what can I give her to build her up? I have a very limited income so would appreciate any home remedies you may know. Going to take her to vet as soon as possible. Don't want to have her put to sleep. Does it sound like she has a chance and will get better? She looks at me with such sad eyes that it makes me cry!So happy that I was able to get her. Thank you, mfk418
Tender loving care will do a lot. I would take her to the vet asap. The worms she has will have to have vet wormer. I'm sure they are tape worms. You can get it from the vet now and it isn't really that spendy.
As for the walks you may want to wait until she has more strength. I would feed her canned food for now as her teeth may not let her eat dry food. The vet will take care of that problem also.
I myself would feed her raw chicken or you can cook it if you want. Anything to get her to eat. Remember if you cook it don't give her the bones. When I first got Wiley he stopped eating and I found myself scrammbling eggs and he would eat them. After the vet fixes her teeth you maybe able to switch her to dry food, that is if she gets to keep her teeth.
Good luck and take her to the vet soon!

Sometimes I tend to give up on humanity! After reading this post I can only think... You are such a sincere and thoughtful person.
Taking on this pup and helping her get better. I agree this pup needs a lot of love and reassurance. She needs you to show her what it's like to be a loved. With this love you'll give her back her confidence. As soon as she believes in herself.. She'll blossom into a great dog.
Your rewards... fierce loyality, love and a friend forever! As soon as the worms are gone and the teeth are back to shape. She will be able to rebuild her emotional pain!
I would recommend calling local vets and explaining the situation to them... tell them that you have a dog that you rescued from a neglectful home and that the dog is in need of immediate medical attention but that you are on a limited income... ask if they know of any programs available for situations like this or if they would be able to work out a payment plan with you.
If that doesn't work - call your local Humane Society and ask the same question... they'd probably rather help someone who is willing to take care of the dog than to have to euthanize him.
I think she will get better. I would start with some Frontline and wormer and do tell the vet about how you got her and that you don't have alot of $$ and mabey they will help or let you make payments. Bring in a stool sample so they know what wormer to give. If a dog is left on a short chain they can't use their muscles so it will take time to bulid them up again. I'm betting with some TLC you will end up with a really great dog and will love you forever!
I know in missouri you can get a care card to use at a vet its like a credit card but can only be used at a vets. A vet i talked to about my moms dog explained that the payments were very low every month and even people with bad credit are able to get one. I keep readin chicken and rice are great for dogs. maby if you take him on very short walks now and then it will help his legs and as he gets healthyer make then longer and more often. sence his chain was so short his muccles may be deterated and need to be built back up.
My moms dog was in bad shape, He's a shihtzu he was very playfull through it all and would eat normal but his hair was falling out, his skin was getting scabby, the scabs looked like small hardened blisters and veried in color from reds to greens and yellows, they were very hard and about the size of a pen tip groped tightly together in gropes around the size of a quarter. Well I couldnt afford to take him because Rocky had just gone to the vet for seasures and we were buying a house, and she couldnt afford to take him because she cant keep a job. Well she wouldnt get the card and the vet told me she wouldnt recomend me getting her one because it can hurt your credit witch wouldnt be so bad but Im quite young, we were trying to buy a house and I have great credit (its well over 750). I think is harder for younger people to get good credit them it is older people who have been working on it steadly. Anyway I went over there at least once a week and trimed what little hair he had left around his scabs me and my brother bought hot spot and I had mom put it on his every day, I pucked dead skin off him (like drandruff not like hanging skin from a cut) and in the end he totaly recovered and is growing his hari back but he seems to hate me and is not as fond of my mom as he was befor she held him down every day to put hot spot on him.
With the care card if you don't pay it all off within the month, I believe the interest is high. With walking. I would put a towel around her waste to support her, and let her have short stints of walking, alowing her to have just enough pressure on her legs to walk. Little by little lessening the support. That poor baby. I feel so sad for her, and soooo happy you have learned that she was there and you saved her. Give her half a tablet of small dog aspirin fro pet-co to help with her pains. Morning and evening. I use it on my poodle.
