My neighbors dog Valentine (minature pincher) had some puppys. It's been a wekk now, but on the third day they were born she said that they got there thumb nails takin out and they got there tails cut off.
Is this normal for a puppy at the age of three days old?
dew claws and tails should be done within 2-3 days of birth if you look it up on really good sites for dogs. not 5 days they are already getting bigger blood vessels and more feeling in them. My vet would not touch them if they were that old.
The dew claw is really an entire digit that has antropied. Normally two small bones are removed as well as the nail to prevent regrowth of the digit later. I do like calling them thumb nails, thats amusing.
3-5 days is standard due to making sure the pups are stable beforehand. Any book on toy breeds will tell you 3-5 days. If your vet isnt going to be available to do them before 5 days of age, then doing them at 2 is ok as well as long as they are doing well. As far as Large breeds...I dont know what their general protocol is, maybe one of the breeders of the large breed can fill us in on that one.
