Truama and Riley... sorry but you are wrong. Take it from me, I am a "farmer" :-)
I can agree with you on the egg thing, those chickens don't live wonderful lives, but the things they say, like all the chickens are "de-beaked" is a misnomer, you take off 1/3 of the top of the beak, not painful, like trimming back a fingernail.
Dairy Cows can either live in free stall or tie barns, although the site you brought up had some depressing info, look at this way, someone who knew nothing about dog breeding/raising and was shown a puppy mill website would say that we should NEVER breed dogs again.
The animals won't produce as much milk if they are not content, so I can guarantee that most farmers keep their animals, happy, healthy, and well fed.
I can't think of any true unbiased websites, there are plenty of animal rights websites who talk abuot the "horrors" all livestock go through and then there are the farming websites who preach that ALL animals are in GREAT shape.
As for the slaughtering most old dairy cattle become dog/cat food and fertilizer. Some end up as low quality hamburger. I would rather see the older cows put to use as food for other animals, including humans, than put to waste.
I always encourage people to buy organic, or better yet local grown/raised. I seldom buy animal products from stores, and produce only this time of year when it isn't availible from my farms/local farmers.
BST... the dairy growth horomone... I won't use it. The UDSA and FDA have approved it, and it is a natural horomone, cattle already produce it, we just increase that production. But the UK has made it illegle... maybe they know something we don't.
honestly, the best products you can buy are from local fairs that are 4 hr projects....
We raised our own beef and pork and we fed high quality feed. The animals were happy and interacted with....Big, BIG difference the the finished product of our steers and what is in the grocery stores......
