Yorkie chews on door trim and eats EVERYTHING
10 mo. old Yorkie rescue chews on door trim despite using bitter apple and other deterrant sprays...also climbs into trash and chews up tissues and mail and ingests whatever she finds on the floor.

I don't know how to get Nellie to stop chewing the wall...we've tried Bitter Apple and other deterrant sprays but she seems determined to chew it up. She has plenty of chew toys in the kitchen where we gate her when we're gone. I can't crate her because she has a history of pooping in her crate and at least it's easier to clean up on the floor. (usually when she has a bowel problem like loose stool or diarrhea which she has periodically)

She also eats everything in her path if she can...we do our best to keep small things out of reach but she'll climb in little trash bins in bedrooms and grab the tissues and shred them everywhere or eat the mail or swallow an earplug that may have fallen on the floor. How do I train her not to eat everything? It is difficult to watch her every second...

Ok, lets starts with crate training. Is she a puppy mill rescued dog?

Is she is NOT get her the smallest crate she an fit in and lie down it, if she is a puppy mill rescue dog get her a large crate, like something you would use for a labrador...



Now walk her more frequently and house and crate train her all over again. Sold for messes(IF you catch her in the act), praise for outside.

If she tries to eat something off the floor scold at once, a loud "NOOO!" will do, then give her an alternate toy to chew on, a nylabone, or greenie, something along those lines.

My dog LOVES bitter apple, I spray it on his chew toys when they need to be "freshened" up... it's disgusting.

Try something called Better Bitters, worked for me.

Good luck.
Anyone who can take over a whole plane with tweezers... might just deserve that plane.

Thanks for the advice. She is a puppy mill rescue. She was last at a reseller's here in GA who had a bunch of puppies on a big cement slab outdoors (in the elements with little shelter)...only human contact was for food and water. She was very skinny when I got her. I have a small crate right now. I also own a bigger one I can use...but not sure I understand how that will help - since it does go against what is commonly known about crate training. Can you elaborate on the concept?

Right now, whenever she has loose stools I don't crate her because I'm afraid she literally can't hold it. But normally, I keep her in the crate at night but penned into a small area of the kitchen during the day with Lily (pomeranian).

put either vinegar, or tabasco sauce or red cayenne pepper paste on the door where she's chewing. It may stain the door though... but she will stop chewing on them, I guarantee it.

I have a silky terrier that would chew everything in site. What I did was everytime I would see or catch her chewing on stuff I would A.Spray the object with betters bitters or b.tell her no and give her an nylar bone to chew on. It takes time but that is how I got her to stop. She is now 1 1/2 and I hardly find her chewing on nothing except her dog bones.

When my Duchess was a baby, and before I had Bella.. she used to shread/chew on everything. I think it was an act for attention/to get back at me when I would leave her. She had severe seperation anxiety.

Maybe a playmate would suit her well. The second I got Bella, Duchess stopped.

This can be used inside as well as out side.

Also, keep all doors to other rooms closed at all times? Keep trash cans up to where she can't reach them. Some people have but a leash on the dog and attach to your belt loop so you have her with you all the time. I put tabasco sauce in a spray bottle and put that on the wood work when I had a different dog that chewed on everything when she could.
I hope you figure out something...it is such a good thing to rescue the dog...give it time and lots of patience, remember she had a hard life and needs to learn how to live in our homes.
