Try asking the Shelter volunteers, which dogs would be better suited with children. A lot of times they know the backgrounds on these dogs just from talking to the family that turned them in.
Another option you may want to try is petfinder.com
When I was looking for a rescue dog, I lucked out and found a local foster rescue, they had pulled her out of a local shelter paid for her shots, eye surgery, and spay.
She was kept in a loving foster home and was introduced to cats along with other dogs to check her temperment (a lot of times they will be introduced to children daily simply because most of the volunteers are families). Another added bonus is that most will crate them from the start, so Lucy was already used to hers...

Edie, I can't say if you would qualify or not but, if you have a disability, you just may.
I just checked Google and, if you type in Service Dogs, you will see many sites for info and/or applications. I hope this helps. The best of luck, and I will pray that you get whatever you need. God bless you.
