Well, I took Toby to a new groomer on Friday. They are brand new and just opening up. I had previously gone in and talked a while with her and then decided to make an appointment. I told her all my likes/dislikes and on the day of the appointment even brought in pictures of what I wanted him to look like. She wasn't in yet when I dropped him off, so I left my work phone number for her to call me with any questions. I received a call shortly after arriving at work and was asked about how I wanted his body cut. I specifically said leave it about 3/4 to and inch long but you can cut his belly shorter. I said I don't want his head to be all puffy and his body to look shaved!!!! She cut me off quickly like she was really busy, which I understand. Well, when I went to pick him up, to my surprise, it was a different groomer there than the one I had spoken to the very first time I went in and made the appointment. Even that would have been fine had she followed my wishes per the pictures that I brought in and the phone call to me..........MY POOR TOBY LOOKS SHAVED!!!!!!! His hair is so short you can not even pick it up off his back. His head is cute and puffy and his body and legs are almost shaved. He looks ridiculous......I am so upset. I know he's just a dog and he isn't a show dog or anything but I paid good money and she did exactly what I asked her NOT to do.....GRRRRR......He looks like a drawing of a stick dog with a circle for a head!!!!!!!
I will take some when I get home and show you his before and after shots. He usually looks soooo cute.......He is Maltese/Pom mix. He looks so skinny and small now like a chihuahua (sp?)........OH THE HORROR!!!!!!! LOL!!! NOt that there is anything wrong with a CHI, it just doesn't match his big puffy head!!!!! Actually he sort of looks like a lion........
Definitely ask for your money back. I remember when my mom dropped her dog @ the groomers for a TRIM. They shaved her body and left a big poofy tail. Ugh, I still shudder thinking about it, lol. Just keep repeating to yourself: It will grow back....
Do you think I can now? It was Friday and I didn't say anything about it when I picked him up.....I'm not so good with confrontation and he was so excited to see me and was all over me and licking me while I was trying to write a check out and hold him that I really didn't get a good look at him until I left. It was $50.00 bucks. And stupid me tipped her anyway........I'm such a wussie..... That's why I'm venting here.....ha ha ..... here are TOby's before pictures:' http://www.dogster.com/?56140
This reminds me of Penny's first cut. The lady called it a Cocker cut but it was a close shave. My poor baby had razor burn all over the top part of her body. She didn't even touch her head. Oh the humanity of it all. I had to have her completely shaved down and start all new. Now I use a friend who is an excellent groomer.
My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.
This isn't the first time I've heard of a groomer butchering a maltese hair cut. I was at a private petstore/rescue, whatever you wanna call it and the owner had a maltese on the table and was grooming her. She had shaved the entire butt of this dog and its belly..bald. She said that it was because it was matted. When she left to help another customer, I showed the owner that you could infact pull the matts out. Their hair is so fine that I would have been able to fix this dogs hair. I think they just get lazy and shave the whole thing. Oh and I got kicked out for talking to her customers, but not before I told her off and the owner of the dog got me on the phone with his wife and I explained that she was being ripped off. Well they left and didn't pay and I wasn't allowed in that store again.
Since it's been paid for and you said nothing at the time, there isn't much you can do now. You can go and explain your dissatisfaction. But since they still performed a service and spent time on the dog. it's unlikely they will refund you.
This is why I groom my own myself. I'd ask that her head not get trimmed as I was liking it a little shaggy, she'd come back with a 10 blade head shave.
Bless your heart. Show dog or not I still would not want mine butchered. To put out 50.00 plus tip you should at least get half way what you wanted. I use to groom and believe me I have seen some bad cuts. If I were you I would go buy a grooming book and invest in some good scissors and clippers and do it myself. I do my schnauzers and it saves alot of money.
i'm sure you were devistated when you saw him but look on the bright side .. it will grow back. it could have been worse. they could have shaved him bald. uggh .. i'm sorry i know it's no time for jokes. just remember for the next time, so that this doesn't happen to you again, don't ever leave him with that woman again .. ever!!! even if you really like that groomers make sure she is off that day and that the one doing the cut knows exactly what you want. also if you get an attitude from anyone there do not trust them with your fur baby!!! i bet he looks cute either way!!!
I'm sorry you had a bad experience, trust me, I've had that happen too. It comes in handy and a heck of a lot cheaper when you know how to do it yourself. I could groom your dog for you if you were close to me ;). The one place I've always gone to suddenly got really crappy with their work, it upsets me, so I no longer go there.
Where on earth do live that they would charge you $50 for such a little dog? And for a shave down?
I think the other folks are right--go to petedge.com and get yourself some grooming supplies and do it yourself. If you don't feel confident, just do a bit at a time. Make sure you have a good light, a stable table you can groom on and a no-slip mat or surface for your dog to stand on.
I work at a grooming place and $50 is a little more than we charge but not too much more (especially if there was hand scissoring involved). I'm sorry you didn't like the way your dog turned out. I myself am very picky with how my yorkie is groomed. But I don't have her hair cut - just her ears tipped, paws trimmed, and sanitary groom. She's a yorkie and I think their hair was meant to be long not short. But if you were unhappy with the groom you should have said so when you picked your dog up. I hate when people call back three days later to say that they didn't like something. If they said so when they came to pick up their dog we could probably have fixed it right then. We had someone with a yorkie a couple days ago that was in. Last time they had the dogs hair cut to 1/2in long and thought that was too long so this time they wanted to go shorter. So the groomers cut the hair to 1/4in long. Well OMG that was just way too short! They wanted some kind of credit when the groomer specifically did exactly what they wanted. So I told them no. Honestly, to me 3/4in is practically shaved to me. I can't imagine cutting my yorkie's hair that short. She would look shaved. Did they really cut your dog's hair shorter than that? I think most people honestly don't know how to judge hair length. Even when I go to get my own hair cut, if I say I want an inch off the lady will show me an inch and verify it because most people don't really know how long an inch is. Maybe the groomers really did mess up with the cut and I'm sorry if they did. I know the Petco groomers where I live will shave a dog bald if they find even one tiny matt. I can't tell you how many dogs we have that come in that were shaved at petco that shouldn't have been. But maybe they did what you asked and it just didn't turn out the way you thought it would. Since you didn't say anything at the time, I wouldn't ask for any money back. I would just say what you would like different the next time. It really is hard to find a good groomer. Where I work we were voted the best groomers for 2006 (and there are a LOT where I live). I'm hoping we'll get 2007 this summer as well. As long as you think they treated your dog well and had a clean place, I would give them another chance - maybe there was just some kind of confusion. But if you really were unhappy and they really butchered your dog then I would ask around for reccommendations and try a new groomer.
Thank you all for your advice and comments. I agree that I probably should not ask for my money back since I did not say anything. Toby did not have any mats so I'm pretty sure that wasn't the reason. I think I will invest in some clippers and learn to do it myself. I took a picture of him yesterday. I'm trying to get it on photobucket. P.S. Hey Merico!!!!....my name and amount of posts changed back when the website changed something. I went from around 2,500 posts back to 1...........AHHHHH......I look like a newbie now!!!
You save yourself tons of money, you get that bonding time with your dog, get to do it at a pace you are both comfortable with, you know your dog is safe etc... I've even learned how to cut human hair from doing it for so long.
Be prepared that your dog will go through some phases as your technique improves, but it makes more sense for you to mess it up as you get a feel for it, than to pay for someone else "experienced" to lol It is not as difficult or intimidating as it seems. Just give it a try!
Thanks Pope. Your guys are all so cute especially that little Jack.....what a cutie pie!!!! Hey you are not so far away from me....how about I pay you to groom Toby? Ha ha ha!!! Isn't Jack the little guy that you recently found or adopted?
