I've noticed a few 'Reputable Breeders' listing their pups on "Puppyfind", "Nextday Pets", etc. It kind of pissed me off. As I would think that any sort of support, to these "shadey" sites, would be equal to supporting a pet store, who sells puppies.

Any thoughts on this??

Just a second, I'm going to look for my breeders..these are only Japanese Chin...but...still. Nevermind, I lost my will power quickly, I personally think if they list on there they are NOT good breeders, I have not seen a single person list there that I would purchase from.

i think that many people use sites like puppyfind, because it reaches so many. There are some reputable breeders, but just as many, if not more, that are not. scammers, millers, byb'ers also sell their puppies through this site. Unless you really research the seller, you would be wise to find a breeder in your local area. I am not happy with that site at all. When i found ads with stolen puppy pics of my frenchies( on two seperate occasions )and i notified the site, many many times, it took them weeks to remove them. I felt like they enabled the scammers to do what they do, by not removing the ads right away even after i provided them proof that the dogs were actually mine and i did not post the ads.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.

Dusty, yes I have noticed SEVERAL "Top Tier", Show/Hobby Breeders on these sites. I've also had friends with their stolen pics on these sites.

As you've stated, just have to do your homework.

I think it is just another tool to help get the word out. There are good breeders and bad breeders no matter what source you are using to look for a breeder. Even TP cant claim 100% "reputable breeders." I think it is just up to the person inquiring about puppies to do their homework and ask questions.

I am about to purchase my first lab. PUPPIES ON WHEELS, The breeder is in MN and I am in IL. She does "deliveries", where she can meet you either "in the middle" or near you, depending on if she goes to your area. She has a list of places she will deliver to and it's charges. The charge for my area would be $100. I pay a deposit of $50 after I choose one from her site and pay the $300 in cash when I pick up. I'm nervous. This is a beautiful lab I'm choosing on her site for $350 (same for all her labs). I've done research but I can't find any reports on her or any info from googling the phone number. The breeder, Corrine, says the dog will come with papers and is a purebred, ACA registered. On her site, she says she is in good standing with the AKC, ACA, and APR and her kennels is with the farm burea as well. The puppies health is covered for 24 hours after delivery. It's genetic health is covered for 12 months. I found her ad and website on the domestic sales website.
Please help me out if you have any advice!

No breeder I've ever seriously considered needed to list on random mass puppy sites to 'get the word' out. Your name is already out there if you do responsible things in the dog community, and prior buyers are more than willing to hype up their breeder into more business if they are happy.

I list my puppies on Puppyfind and Nextdaypets and I feel that I am a very reputable breeder. Why would you think a reputable breeder would not use these sites? If the person looking at your ad does their homework/research, they should be able to differentiate between the good and the not so good breeders.

Boxer ~ The Breeders, I am speaking of, have always claimed to have only a handful of litters a year. They are top-knotch, and I would think they would have a waiting list. I would certainly wait for one of their dogs. I wouldn't think it would be necessary to be associated with some of these websites.

Where should breeders advertise anyway. Word of mouth is good but what about reaching out to people who dont know your out there, not every one looking for your breed is going to know someone else that owns one of your dogs. Epecially if you dont have that many litters which most reputable breeders dont. Your number isnt going to magically pop up in their head. Also they may have heard about you but cant find a phone number, they can easily look it up on any directory site. Most of my pups are spoken for by the time the litter arrives, people contact me through various means, some are people who have one already, some word of mouth, some are through various internet sites. Just because I use an internet site doesnt mean I take any less care of my dogs or puppies, or that they are any less quality than they were before I put them on. An internet site does not determine the genetics or health of my dogs.

Labnewbie- there are several things that bother me. First she will meet you - It is convent for you, but you don't get to see the dam, sire, or place the pups are kept. ACA is another area of concern- it tells me she has a dog that was not sold to her with full AKC breeding rights. If both the dam and sire are AKC she should be selling the puppies with either full or limited AKC papers. Another red flag - the health agreement- a lab should have a health agreement for at least 2 years against some health problems. Labs can have hip problems and OFA doesn't register until 24 months, so a breeder should give you at least 2 years in a health agreement to cover the hips. The price is also very low.

Labs have been over breed and have a lot of health problems so please be very careful when buying a lab puppy. Pictures can lie and you might not be getting the dog you thought you paid for. Once you see the puppy no matter if it isn't the one in the picture your heart will tell you to take it, rescue it, but you are not a rescue group and maybe adding to the problem.

Good Luck and ask the "breeder" more questions

I know as a Boxer breeder I do have a waiting list myself, but they are waiting because they want a certain color or male or female and If for some reason they didn't get what they wanted, then they wait till the next litter even if it is another year or so before I have another one.
Word of mouth has gotten us 90% of our customers, but like others have said, it doesn't hurt to get your name out there other ways, internet is good and bad at the same time.
There are a lot of people that will hunt people to make more money off of them.
like us end up traveling all over to deliver dogs, which we have ran across with having puppies that are out west. You know (you get what you pay for) anyone that does the research and talks to the breeder more then once and can ask any questions they want, and still doesn't feel right (don't buy the puppy)
You know your word as good as the person who gives it to you. Even if you called a number out of the paper or got a number from a friend doesn't mean you would like the person or the puppies.
Everyone handles things the way they want their business to go. I want people to come back and buy everyone of their dogs from me, so we have contracts and health guar. and we go out of our way to help educate these people on what they are getting into. If for some reason they can't keep the dog we will take it back without one question. That is just part of it, people who are buying the dogs aren't asking enough questions and doing enough research that is why there is back yard breeders, that is why people are taking peoples money with no dog in return.
EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IS WHAT A PERON NEEDS TO DO TO GET THE PUPPY OF THEIR DREAMS.

Like there is a difference between terrific pets and puppyfind or nextdaypets. Not really. You can say that at least puppyfind added the 'scam alert button' and nextdaypets has their id verification for breeders. All the sites (again including this one) are making a ton of money and they really don't care much of where it comes from.

I don't see what is wrong with advertising on any puppy sites like the ones that have been listed by other posters. If you are a reputable breeder people will be able to tell and they'll be happy to have found you on the easily google-able sites, you know. Its doesn't make you less reputable just because you put up an ad. It draws people to your website, gets your phone number and name out there to people you couldn't normally reach. Word of mouth only goes so far especially when you're just starting out, or if you only have one-two litters per year. In those cases there are only so many people that you've sold a puppy to that can tell their friends and family, even less people when its a small breed which equals small litters.

IMHO, I don't think that it is bad for a breeder to advertise on an internet site. I have read what some of the OPs have wrote, and word of mouth only gets you so far. No matter what kind of tool you use to advertise, there are always the good breeders and the bad breeders. You just have to do your research to figure it out for yourself. You would almost be stupid to invest money in a dog, sometimes even a lot of money, not to do your homework on the breeder. Of course that is just my opinion.

Well, you have not convinced me. My form of advertising would be my own website, which could be found in a search engine, not on a site with sooo many shadey people. It would be through an AKC list, as well as "full breed" magazines. I would not choose to be associated with them, nor would I want "word of mouth" to say how great they are just because they had a good experience with me.

There are way too many thieves, puppymills, and BYB's on these sites. Nope, I would choose to keep my good name in tact.

Keep in mind, I was only asking for thoughts on this, don't take it personally.

I am not a breeder but many years ago I did raise a few litters for show. Most of the puppies I kept or gave to family members. I did sell one or two to show homes and supported the buyers in learning about showing.

To me a reputable breeder is one who knows the background of their dogs, does as much as possible to test for genetic defects, provides for the "mental" and physical health of the puppies and their adult dogs and never breeds a litter unless they are willing and prepared to provide a quality life time home for all of the puppies in the event the "right new home" doen't come along.
I don't have a problem with reputable breeders advertising on sites like puppyfind or this one. I would rather see someone advertise anywhere that is willing to educate the general public on responsible puppy buying and be willing to sift through the many inquiries to help those who really are trying to find a puppy for the right reason. Especially as there are many out there that jut want to make a buck and could care less about where the puppies are going. I know for a fact there is at least one breeder on this site that advertises under several different names and has a bad reputation in their care and breeding practices.
Lets face it, with the internet people are going to browse and look at a lot of different sites to find puppies. Hopefully they will at least have the chance to be able to contact one or two caring dog people and knowledgable breeders whatever site they go to. There are folks out there that will accept the guidance and advice of a truly reputable breeder.
One more thing .....not all big name and sucessful show breeders are reputable either. I certainly ran into my share of them when I was showing at the AKC shows. So wherever you there are good and bad!!!

You know, I'm starting to think MANY "Reputable Breeders" are now jumping on the BAND WAGON. I will post information on a Show Breeder, well known, well respected, and a flippin' PUPPY MILL. Busted for animal cruelty, fined, and sent to jail. Or google it yourself, Jenifer Siliski.

And how would I advertise?? Simple, with my own website, breed magazines, AKC list, etc. I would not be associated with the BS on Puppyfinder, Nextdaypets, etc.

I am just beginning to wonder EXACTLY how many pups are these "Top of the line" show breeders are popping out? Why do they have sooooo many that they are advertising all over cyber space?

I've, recently discovered another "show breeder" who has a seperate phone number. Her friend is involved. They are partnered up to "dump" her dogs on these sights, without others, within the "Show" community finding out. This is to hide the massive amount of dogs she has.
