my collie/beagle mix, Jasper, has come so far since we adopted him from a shelter two years ago, as when we adopted him he had no training. With a ton of love and patience he has learned and continues to learn so much. One thing I cannot figure out about him is his whining. It is all of the time. He whines when he's excited and also upset. When I walk him and he spots another person or another dog he starts whining so loud, I sometimes wish he prefered barking. I love my boy, and have approached his whining by ignoring it and tried to even soothe him when he does it, but nothing works. Is it a characteristic of one of the breeds he is from? Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and found a solution.
It could be just the beagle in him. They are know for alot of talking. It is just the way they are. Collies are usually very quite dogs. That is just my guess, and if that is what it is, there isn't much you can do. I know husky's are another breed that love to talk. I haven't met one that doesn't. good luck, and just my opinion.
My 15 month old Pointer/Lab whines all the time. Sometimes she sounds like a seal. LOL Someone told me she likes to hear the sounds that she makes. If your dog checks out ok with your Vet from any illnesses or injuries, then that could be the reason. I too got Shylo from a shelter this past September, so you have to go with your instincts. I sometimes make the same sounds right back at her & laugh. She is just too cute.
My 8 mth old springer/brittany mix will sit and stare at me and whine when he wants his supper, even if it is to early. I get home usually at 5 and if I come home early, he thinks it must be time to eat, so he just sits, stares at me and whines, like "come on it must be time to eat isn't it". They are great fun aren't they.
