I am a college student and I am looking for someone to keep me company in my one bedroom condo. I absolutely love my dogs I that I grew up with, but I am looking for something that has as minimal shedding as possible, that is fairly small (small to medium small), and is very loving. Anyone have any ideas?
If you want non/low-shedding, you might want to think about a groomable breed if you can afford the grooming. I know collage is rough. I personally like poodles. Go to your local shelter, and see what catches you eye. You never know what you might find. Good luck
Well have you checked your local shelters and rescues and looked for "your right dog" there? Who knows you might just see one you love. As for the minimum shedding, I had a Jack Russell Terrier and yes they shed but it is very eay to vacume up. If you buy one of those small, easy to assemble fast ones you can quickly dispose of that shedded hair. Also frequent brushes help keep it to a minimum. Just a suggestion.
I would not really recomend a Shetland Sheepdog in your case. If you don't want lots of shedding. But other than that shelties are a great breed. But, I would recommend a Shih Tzu. I recommend the Shih Tzu because they don't shed and they are very lovable. And they are small. But, the only main thing is that you have to get them groomed by a professional, it cost any where from $30-$60. But, $60 is a little expensive. But, I would recommend the Shih Tzu. I have both Sheltie and Shih Tzu so I know.

If I were getting a small dog it would be a dachshund. Not sure about how much they shed their hair, but it is certainly short!
I like the idea of going to the shelter to look, and seeing if you fall in love with one, too. That's how my family got the dog I grew up with. She was awesome. A beagle shepherd mix (we think). She lived to be 22.

I'll add my voice to the "check the shelters or local rescues". Since you don't have a specific breed, but rather a "type" in mind, rescue would be a great idea for you. Not only would you find a great companion, but you would be saving a life and making room for another who needs rescuing.
Good luck with your search.

How about rescuing a Japanese Chin or Shih tzu? There are rescues for almost any breed of dog. The rescues normally evaluate the dog prior to placing it in a new home. They also do a thorough check of the adoptive home, to be sure it is the right type of environment for this particular animal.
I have both a Shih tzu and Japanese Chins. My Chin is one of the most charming dogs I have ever met, he is personable and just a character. He's very dedicated to me and loves to perch on the back of the couch when we watch tv.
For the shedding, I would not recommend a Dachshund or a Rat Terrier. My aunt and mother own both these breeds (well, the Dachshund is a mix w/Chihuahua) and they are shed machines. You have to have one of those lint rollers at all times. My aunt & mom don't mind, so their ok with it, besides they clean like theres no tomorrow. They are great dogs, but the shedding thing wouldn't work for what you're looking for.
You want non/low shedding I would recommend a Poodle or Yorkie. But I agree with the others, check out your local shelter or animal control facility and see what they may have for you. You could find your perfect friend and save a life. :-)
