I'm hoping a can get some advice as I'm having a major problem with my 10 week old peeing in his crate. I've only really noticed it the last couple days but now makes me wonder if it's been going on all along as I did notice it once or twice previously.
I thought the housebreaking was going really well as he would go outside with no problems and he was starting to run to the back door and sniff around when he had to go. I started paper training in the house but changed over to taking him outside as co-workers said its better to do that now as it may be tough to change later. I've been taking him outside for about a week to week and a half and (other than his crate) he has not had an accident in the house since. I've been pretty diligent with monitoring his food and don't let him have any water or food at least an hour prior if he's going to be in his kennel for a longer time. I don't think his kennel is too big as I have one of those wire crates that is sectioned off. I always take him outside just prior to putting him in his crate. And when he does pee in his crate he does it right in the middle not off to the side.
Yesterday my parents let him out then put him in his crate. He imeediately started to pee so they took him back outside and he was fine. Last night when I got home I took him outside and he went pee and poop. I put him in his crate so I could have supper and he pooped in the crate. I cleaned it out and put him back in and he immediately peed on his bed. I took his bed out and put him back on the bare floor of the crate and he peed again. I cleaned it up and he peed one more time. After that he didn't do it. But he went to the bathroom 4 times in about 20 min inside his crate. I called the pet hospital to see if it was maybe a bladder problem or urinary infection and they said its possible but there was no blood in the urine so the only way to tell would be to bring him in for a test. The lady said it sounded like a behavioral problem and he could be protesting to being in his crate. She advised to leave him in there without the bed so that he'll learn if he pees on his bed he won't have one.
I threw his bed in the wash and left only a towel down for bedding. I let him out before I went to bed and again at 3 am and he was fine and went outside; but, when I woke up this morning at about 630 he had peed in there again. Now I have him in there with no bedding, just the plastic floor. Partly because that way I can see for sure if he pees in there but also I have no more bedding to put down as he had soiled everything.
I've been doing a lot of reading on crate training and most things contradict themselves. Some books say to always make the crate a positive experience. I try to by giving treats and praise but sometimes when he just won't listen I put him in there to calm down. Also, other dog owners have told me that if he does something wrong to give him a smack on the nose and say no. I've been doing that with him mainly when he starts biting and if he just won't stop I put him in the crate. I'm afraid I might have made a situation where he is afraid of me or his crate. Also, I don't know what to do when he pees in there. Should I leave out all the bedding so its just the floor or will that create more problems with him not liking his crate! Even though he goes in his crate so much it hasn't affected him going outside. He still goes regularily woth no problems when I take him out there
When I clean his crate I use that special pet cleaner to neutralize odours.
He's never in his crate for too long periods as I usually bring him to work and I play with him most of the day. If he is at home someone will stop by once and I will run home once to let him out so the longest he is usually in there is 4-5hrs. When I'm at home with him I usually take him outside every hour or so.
I'm really hoping this is a phase and he'll grow out of it as I don't know what else to do and how to get it to stop. I don't want to put his bed back in because it seems I have to wash it almost daily.
Hoepfully someone will have some insight as I am at a complete loss!!! Thanks
sorry, he's a 10 week old pure bread beagle. I have a little gold wire pen set up outside, lined with gravel, where he goes pee. Its set up that way now as I have no yard. I put him in and close the door until hes done and he usually goes right away. His bed is a black wire crate from the same company. Someone made the suggestion that he may be confused as he goes pee in a wire crate and sleeps in a different wire crate. Is there a way to correct this? without getting rid of the current material??
Does He have any toys in his crate?? The only thing I can think of is maybe he's bored @ night and thats why he goes in his crate. How often is he in his crate when you are home? Maybe he's bored of being in his crate so much and thinks that if he goes to the bathroom in his crate he'll be let out. How big is his crate? If I read your post right, you can fit a bed in there and theres floor space ? Cause thats to big. He literally only needs to be able to sit, lay down, and turn around. Thats all I can think of, I hope it helps a little :)
p.s - You can take your puppy to work w/ you?!?! Lucky!!

In my opinion, 4-5 hours alone in a crate of any type is too long for a 10 week old puppy. I also think your crate is probably too big. If he's going to be left alone for that long, I would suggest an even bigger container, an X pen. He'll come along eventually.
