Hi soon I will be graduating from college and will have my own place. I have always wanted a dog since I could remember, but my parents wouldn't get one because we traveled a lot. They said I could get one when I move out and yea it's coming soon. I have been waiting for this moment and have studied all different kinds of breeds and watched tons of dog shows and different tv shows about dogs since I was in elementary school! I'm deciding from a couple of dogs..... mini english bulldog, french bulldog, pug, tea cup yorkie, mini dauchsand (not sure how to spell, also by my apartments now at college my neighbors across the street have these and they bark a lot and I don't like that at all), and a boston terrier. what can you tell me about these dogs and I'm looking for something that is small, doesn't really shed, a lap dog that will always want to sit on my lap, def. one that doesn't yelp a lot, and will be easy to clean, but most of all a dog that I will love to have as my first dog!!! <3
I love frenchies, they are cute. You have to becareful with the teacup yorkie, and mini bull dog. They are breed down from larger dogs, and you can sometimes get a larger one even if the breeder sells it to you as smaller. All of the breeds you mentioned can have a ton of health problems so screen your breeders well. make sure that give a really good health guarentee. I have been told that yorkies are hard to housbreak, but I have never owned one. Just something I was told by clients. I had a friend who had a bulldog, and the breathing problems with horrible. He could easily get over heated and die. Frenchies I know can have allergies, and skin issues. These things are just what I have heard. it doesn't mean every dog out there has a major problem. Just do your homework, and research breeders well. Good luck on gettting your first baby.
I agree on the Yorkie issues. My friend who has 2 was just telling me today that she has to keep piddle pads out and even taped one to the wall where her male loves to lift his leg. And when she works at home it's hard to take conference calls because they might start yapping like crazy if they see a leaf blow by. They are so adorable though! When I've been at her house they seem so well behaved.
First and foremost I would of course recommend going to your local shelters and getting one there. Next I just want to inform you that there is no such thing as a "teacup" yorkie, it's just a title put there by byb's to make more money(I believe it's the same for "mini" bulldogs but not sure) secondly while I love, love, love bulldogs of any shape and size I wouldn't think they'd make a comfortable lap dog as they can be a bit cumbersome and heavy. I have a mini dachshund mix and my best friend and roomate has a mini dachshund and they aren't yippy at all. A lot of it is how you train them. If you're looking for a lap dog, most toys were originally bred for that purpose. Personally I'd recommend a Japanese Chin, I've never owned them but I've heard great things.
Judging by the things you suggestion in wants and unwanted.. I might suggest a toy poodle. They are small, shed very little and love to be loved if raised right. I have a poodle/shih tzu mix and she only barks when alerted to noise outside of my house.. and I like that. I'm sure they could be trained not to do so. I live in a small place and have health issues that keep me from exercising her alot and she gets along fine just playing around the house. They are good for small spaces. Dachshunds are good, too. They don't require alot of exercise and love to be lap dogs.
