My 9 year old cat has cancer and has been really really bad this weekend....he won't seem to let go...should I let it happen naturally or should I put him to sleep if it doesn't happen by morning??

I had to face the same decision with my 15 year old Nikita last fall. She had a huge tumor in her face and mouth area and the vet said that all we could do was wait until it started to effect her quality of life because the surgery would probably kill her. By the end, she still had her mind intact which made it incredibly horrible for me to have to make the decision. But she was losing weight because she couldn't eat well (I had her on a soft diet but it just irritated the tumor site), all she could do was lie around and when she scratched at it she would bleed. Her kidneys were starting to fail. So helping your cat find peace is the right thing to do if he is suffering. What kind of treatment has he already had? What was the vet's advice for how long he could live? Is he in pain? Does he still have a chance? Did you do all that you could to save him? You don't need to answer me. Just ask yourself those questions and if they all come out to him suffering needlessly, then you will have your decision. It's the hardest thing in the world to do but nobody can make that decision for you.

Why would you even come on a forum to ask something like that? None of us can see the cat; none of us know what is going on. Only you and your vet can make that decision. If you don't trust your vet, I would suggest you find a new one or get a 2nd opinion. (and NOT from someone who has never even seen your cat and has no medical experience)

That's what you said when a friend of yours called a vet and claimed the vet told her over the phone to have a dog PTS.

How is this any different? You're asking ON A FORUM if you should have your cat PTS. Not a vet, not a vet tech...a FORUM.

First, since you say "wasn't", I assume you've already had him PTS. Also, he wasn't suffering? It was taking longer than anticipated? WTF?!!! Sounds to me like you just couldn't be bothered either to care for him, or to pay for the medical treatment.

Either way, I find you a sorry excuse for a pet owner. I feel bad for this guy that you apparently sentenced to death, along with all the other cats that you let outside and it somehow became someone else's fault when they all disappeared.

i think that if the poor guy isnt in any pain, you should just let him live out his days in peace. comfort him, let him know he is loved, and try to make his transition a painless one. if he is in pain, i agree with catlover, you should discuss it with your vet, as to how much pain he is in, and what is the best course of action, to either let him go, or let him go himself. i pray for the best for you and your baby, no one deserves to go through what your going through, stay strong, for your baby.
