I know the shock of losing a son. I can't imagine the shock of people purposely coming to my son's funeral to say that "God hates you, and it's because of your rebellion that this child is dead". This is the first I've heard of this so called church, but perhaps members of the forum have heard of them, based in Kansas. The young man they are talking about was decapitated on a greyhound bus, not that far from where I live. I posted it as a thread called Horror in sunny Manitoba. The article was on the front page of today's paper (Brandon Sun). What an utterly sick and sad group.
That church has held protests at soldiers' funerals (as in more than one) here in Texas. They are nothing but a bunch of cowards. They alway protest outside of Kansas and their !@#!%!$^ leader is never there. The most sickening thing is they always get police protection, not the families of these brave soldiers. I takes a really sick person to do something like that to a family that is going through one of the worst times they will ever experience. Sorry but I don't think the first amendment was meant to protect people like this.
Police protection for what? Shouldnt the police be getting rid of them for being a nusance or something? I would be pissed if it were my local police and they were using my tax dollars to pay the police to do that.
The leader dont show up because he is scared someone will get to him probably. What a coward!!!!
Ruffian, if you just punch Westboro Church (I know, it's an oxymoron) they actually have a list of places they are going to protest, Tim's being one of them. I can't see how they are allowed to cross the border, but Canada can be pretty lax. I'm sure they're just saying they're coming up for a holiday, and in seperate cars. The article in the Brandon Sun said that Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of the leader of the 'church', Fred Phelps, said the murder of Tim MacLean was God's response to Canadian policies that allow homosexuality, abortion and adultery. She said " Is it legal to have abortions up there? They are teaching you that God is a big fat liar (by making sins legal)"She also said "God sent that guy to do it." Apparently the 'church' had already organized a protest in Red Deer Alberta, and Toronto, and Phelps Roper said this "Lo and behold, we were going to Canada and God offered us a gift. The curse of God was put upon you (Canada) when that young man's head was cut off." Now if that wasn't enough, PETA tried to add insult to injury by making an advertisement that compares Tim McLean's violent death to the killing of animals for food. The papers have refused to run the ad. If you go to PETA'S website you will see the advertisement. The protesters are really pushing their luck if they show up at that funeral on Saturday. (tomorrow) They have a whole bunch of angry people waiting for them.
Through facebook, we have been able to get upwards of 800 people to form a human wall around the family today, at Tim McLean's funeral. Apparently the border was supposed to stop the protesters, and nabbed some, but some got through. Three of my sons are there with their rugby and hockey teams; and have promised to make it impossible for the protesters to get near the church with a well devised plan. Although there was mention of shoving certain placards and posters up various protesters arses, the men have more respect for the family than to create trouble.
Yea, Pen2 thank you and thank your sons and their friends and everyone else that showed up to see that this family could bury their loved one without more greif being thrown on them. We have had problems with people like this coming to Michigan to disrupt the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. No family should have to endure such treatment when they are already greiving. To say that these people belong to a Christian church is to defame everything Christ taught.
Drogheda, at the last minute when the protesters found out who was going to be there to greet them, they called off the protest. In the Brandon Sun today, Shirley Phelps-Roper said they got through in the middle of the night on Thursday, but some were stopped. She also said, they fed ex'd their placards and banners. When the protesters got wind of the human barricade, Phelps-Roper backed off, saying "it appears there is no religious freedom in Canada". She also said "I'm getting worried about the whole Canada thing, and I'll be happy when we get safely out of the country". This woman insisted the group wouldn't be dissuaded by the human guard waiting for them at the funeral. She said " A couple hundred people, are you kidding me? That's child's play, usually we see 1,000 people out there, (which there was well over that number) God can do things that you wouldn't imagine. The last thing I am worried about are some brutes, Canada. We will know what to do when the hour comes". It makes me sick at heart to know these so-called Christians are out there. I've done a bit of research too, and as was said before, they have picketed the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. All I can say is that they are a joke, and they should be prosecuted, in the U.S as hate mongers, if there is such a thing. One day they will show up at the wrong place, at the wrong time, because you can't behave like this and get away with it forever. Thanks Drogheda, we were all proud( especially the boys and their various teams) to insure that an already shattered family never had to deal with the unholy church of Westboro.
Maybe if one day theY take a but kicking because of their stupidity some one can tell them " this was just a message from God " How can people be so mean. My heart goes out to this family and to all the families who have lost loved ones in the war. Tonight I am very proud of being Canadian.
The Phelps have been around for quite a while now. His church members are constituted in large part by his own family members, a large number of which are attorney who LOVE to sue over protection of their rights.
They are reprehensible and sorry excuses for humans. The worst of their signs are handed over to the very youngest members of their "church", added shock value. The bottom line for this group is "God hates gays. America loves gays. Therefore God hates America. Because God hates America, he rejoices at the death of our soldiers. God is especially thrilled when soldiers die horrid deaths. This group loves to taunt the family members with descriptions of the destruction done to a human body by, oh say a landmine.
There is a motorcycle group made up in part by veterans that travels to any veteran's funeral to which they have been invited. They provide a human screen for the family of the fallen. The Patriot Gaurds are impressive to say the least.

I don't know anything about this group, but I agree it is dispicable, unfortunately thats the price countries like ours pay for freedom of speech. In the Uk there is a problem with some muslim extremists who clearly want to create divisions within minority groups yet the government seems helpless to take the appropriate action. Whilst I consider myself to be a spiritual person I personally think that too many people use the name of the church to justify their actions. Its sad to think that most of the unrest and violence in the world today is touted in the name of religion.
I know a Marine veteran who's part of the group of motorcycle riders who provide protection and separation from this group at Marine funerals. It seems that nearly every member of Phelps' "church" is related to him, and anybody who wants to start his own religion gets to. The guy probably does have some kind of mental disorder, but these demonstrators also know exactly what they are and are not allowed to do at the burials so as not to get arrested or ejected.
I wonder about people who live with auditory hallucinations. I know that most of them know the difference between a "hearing voices" voice and an actual voice, or at least learn to tell the difference. But do some of them really think it's the voice of God talking to them, and that something horrible will happen to them if they don't obey? In this case, I have to think if there are hallucinations involved, it's just the one guy experiencing them. How on earth does he keep the others convinced that God's telling him all this bizarre stuff? He reminds me of that preacher in "Cold Comfort Farm," (I loved that movie) who ran the Church of the Quivering Brethren.

Pyr Mom I have a very good friend who is also a part of the motorcycle brigade! They are wonderful. They try to make all funerals, and I think have made most if not all of them, since this nut group started out. Hooray for them!!
being the litigious society that we are, couln't the families sue this so called "church" for undue mental duress? They are clearly taunting the families and causing more anxiety for them purposfully. I know the laws protect their rights to "protest" but what about protecting these families? We should start a petition and hire the best scum-bag lawyer in the country to sue the hell out of these people!!
And I too know a Patriot Guard rider. They are wonderful men and women. RIDE ON GUYS!!!
