I've been reading some of the posts of docking and cropping and I've basically gathered that some think of it as amputation and cruel to do these things at a later age in life. Why do you not think it's a amputation at 3 days verses a month old?
At three days there is really no bone yet.It is still cartilage (sp)? and it either cut or baned off.Little bleeding. At 3 months the bones are all there and it takes surgery to remove the tail. I have seen dogs that have had their tails redone at a later stage in life, and it is painfull for the puppy. If tails are not docked before a week old. They should never be removed.
I actually like the look of docking and cropping, and the breeds I am most interested in have one or both it seems, but IMO to put a mixed breed under anesthetic only to dock a tail seems kind of foolish. If you are referring to the other thread I commented on, . If they could get a vet to do it, while the dog was altered then it is up to them, but it is a different story at 6 months, the average age of altering, than it is at 3 days.
JMHO, but if you don't like it don't do it and leave those of us who do alone. I agree with Rutylr, at 3 days the pups just don't feel as much pain or bleed as much. When docking is done later in life, it's a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia, stitches and pain meds. Unless there a medical reason, it probably shouldn't be done later in life, but that's up to the owner and their vet. In the grand scheme of things, what does it matter if a dog, who is loved and well cared for it's entire life as a member of the family, has a minor cosmetic procedure. Why not get worked up over the dogs that die in shelters, live their entire lives on the end of a chain, are fought to the death or live in puppymills.
I wanted to add that I personally believe docked dogs make better house dogs. I can't count how many times I've been hit by a thick Lab tail, sometimes hard enought to leave a bruise. They knock drinks and breakables off tables, too. Besides, there is nothing cuter than a docked dog that wags his whole butt when he's happy.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone. I just wanted to know why some thought docking as an amputation at a later age rather than it not be at 3 days. Cutting something off is cutting something off. Dont get me wrong I'd rather it be less for the puppy than later in a dogs life having it done. I wouldnt either take a dog in later and have it docked nor would I for the ears. Yes both my boxers are docked but floppy, I rather them have floppy ears I love some floppy eared dogs. So I'm not thrashing at the ones that like doing the docking.
Docked tails and removal of dewclaws is done before the pups have any nerves their or bone. They also have little reality to know what is going on. Most of the crying you hear if from being pick up and not being with mom. I have never had a pup actually scream or cry when the tail/declaws are actually being removed. Anything done at a later date, I dont care if it is a tail, a nail, or ears I belive is cruel. If ears could be done at 3 days, I say go for it, otherwise I see no reason to put an animal through that. just my opinion.
