I breed registered australian shepherd dogs and my female refuses to eat. I have never had this problem before with my aussies, but with this dog I do. I know they will go off food for a period of time, but this dog eats a small amount, if any, and then just doesn't eat anymore. My dogs are on a feeding schedule and are on a quality dog food. Nothing has recently changed. She tends to drop weight because of this and her condition is not what I would like to see for a pregnant female. Her pups from the last litter did fine, and I chalked it up to a first litter, but she seems to be starting the trend again. What can I supplement her with to get her back into a better condition? Just thought someone out there might have an idea, or experienced this before. Thanks!
I breed mini aussies, and sometimes mine wont eat much either. I do give them a supplment after four weeks of pregnancy. It consists of van. yogurt, pumkin, and just born replacer all mixed together. I do find they graze a bit at night when they are in their crates. I wish you lots of luck with your pups. I thought I was expecting, but the AI didn't take. I am all bummed out.
Thanx alot to both of you, I will definately try those things. I had heard that you shouldn't give a calcium supplement because of the risk of birth defects in the puppies. I have always supplemented with some form of calcium (milk, cream, yogurt) and never had any trouble, I am glad i'm not the only one! I just find it weird that she just doen't eat much. I would say she eats about half of the amount of food that she normally eats. I don't like her to get real thin during pregnancy, because she is a real giver and a good mother. Even if she is thin her pups look fantastic, I'm just trying to keep her in the best condition that I can. Again I appreciate the help. I'm sorry your AI didn't take, thats a real bummer! I hope you have better luck next time :)
