I need help quick!!! I have a 3 months old Shih Tzu. I started her on raw food a week and a half ago, mixing it with dry food, which I just found out today that's a big NO-NO, although she loves it. I intend to stop after reading many websites and forums about it today. (I was mixing the dry food - Taste of the Wild and raw food - Primal Raw, which are both suppose to be pretty high quality with no grain)
I have no problem with switching to raw food completely. However my concern is that it said the portion I should be feeding is only 2 oz a day, 1 oz per meal. If anyone is feeding the Primal Raw Nugget, 1 nugget equals to 1 oz, and those thing is pretty TINY!!! My puppy was eating about four teaspoons of dry food with half of a nugget each meal. I just think 1 nugget is not going to be enough. So I am kind of stuck. Can I mix it with canned food then? Or should I just disregard the recommended amount and feed her more? I don't want her to be hungry all the time, although many said it's ok. I need some suggestions! Thank you in advance!!!!
The real problem is to find out why it is a big no-no. There are people who belive in only raw, and others mix. I feed only high quality dry, and use the raw as treats for the show ring. Raw can be very expensive, so that is why alot of people mix it. Just my opinion.
The reason it is a big no-no, IMO, is that a lot of dogs have tummy problems when the food is mixed for the same meal. Raw and kibble digest at different rates, which could (but may not) cause issues with respect to bacteria clinging to kibble--which takes a dog longer to digest.
I feed raw to my dog at 2-3% of his body weight per day, depending on how he's looking from week to week. I strive to keep him at a weight that looks good on him. With puppies, you want to feed 2-3% of their expected ADULT weight.
May I suggest that you join a forum of raw feeders who feed like you do (there are a few different ways of feeding raw)? You might even find one specificially for shih tzus. I'm sure they'd be able to offer you good, specific advice.
Just Google something like "raw fed dog" and go from there. You also might want to check Yahoo to see if there are any raw fed groups you might want to join. I belong to a Yahoo group that is specifically for Basenjis--there may be one (or more) for Shih Tzus.
