Dogs in bad light could it have been different
Even 16 years ago this was a problem or starting of a problem

We rented the old "Beethoven" Movie from 1992 about the Saint Bernard.

And at the beginning if you remember when he was a puppy in the store the biker woman thought he would be a good dog to protect her junkyard and then Beethoven pees on her and she

She asks "got any Pit Bulls?"

Even then they were seen in a light that wasn't positive.

In the end the bad guys end up in that junk yard and are attacked by 4 Dobermans.

so that is two dogs shown in a bad light.


No wonder these dogs are seen so badly now. and its not just this movie but others too but this is the one we were watching tonight and that was from 1992.

Do you think if it weren't for movies and the media these dogs would have had a better fate?

Unfortunatly, I don't belive the movie magic is the problem. It is the general public and media. Tons of breeds have gone through this over the years. German shepherds, rotties, pits, etc, etc. I also belive the bigger problem is in the cities where more people live closly together. Untrained dogs owned by ignorant people. then the dog gets out, off its chain, etc. attacks someone and the media picks it up. No talk of how the dog was abused, or teased, nothing. It isn't the owners fault for being stupid, it is the dogs becuase of its breed, it is bad. I love pit bulls to death, they are one of my favorite breeds. People have distroyed them by fighting them. Someone wants one, doesn't do the research to find a good breeder, keeps it on a chain, doesn't train the dog and then wonders why it gets nasty. Yes I firmly belive you have to know your line before buying a pit or am staff. There are some very nasty lines out there. But I don't think they are all bad. People are stupid, the general public is the problem with the breeds in bad light.

I agree with illusion--it is the owner's fault more than the movies. I cannot think of a movie with pit bulls in it. But these dogs have repeatedly been headlined for attacks on humans. It boils down to poor handling by owners or people who intentionally train these animals to be "killers". I once worked for an animal emergency clinic for 8 years. We would have to muzzle Cocker Spaniels way more than the Pits.

Wow, I need to watch that movie again. I honestly didn't remember either part. I don't think it necessarily shows the breeds in a bad light though. It says far more about the people. There are plenty of ignorant people that get pits just b/c they want a tough looking dog. They know nothing about the breed or responsible dog ownership and that's where you get problems. What kind of people are too cheap to buy a security system and would leave dogs in a junk yard 24/7? I do think, however, that the media has done a horrible disservice to many dog breeds (I think they've done a bigger disservice to the American people in general).

The only shows I can think of with pit bulls in them are the Little Rascals movie and the original series. Petey was a pitbull (actually more than one). As for dobermans, I've seen them in a lot of movies where they are the stereotypical junkyard dog. There was a short series where they played a group of dogs doing good and foiling crime. I think it was called The Doberman Gang or something like that. If the movies were to blame for the bad reputations dogs get I'd think rotties would be at the top of the list. They are in a lot of movies playing vicious or evil dogs.

Was it Rotties in Damian? Oh my God--I still can remember how scairy those dogs were. And the Harry Potter movies--was that a Neopolitan two-headed Mastiff? But I agree-- Rotts and Dobies have taken most of the Hollywood bad rap.

Funny they say that about pitbulls on beethoven, but yet Cujo was a saint bernard. I own saint bernards one of my dogs name is Cujo, so of course I try to watch all Saint Bernard related movies. Fluffy from harry potter looked like a pitbull or a cane corso. Fang was a Neopolitan Mastiff Hagrids dog.

Fluffy from Harry Potter was a 3 headed Pitbull, Fang, the dog Hagrid keeps in his house is the Neapolitan Mastiff (although in the books he is a Boarhound).

I think that the media is mostly to blame, not movies.

Yes Fang was a Neo. I thought Petey was an AM. Bulldog? Cujo had rabies. The book was WAY better than the movie, had the dog's point of view too, alot of how the dog kept thinking he was bad, but couldn't control himself. Got bit by a bat or something in the beginning. Those poor poor pits. I think it's a combination of media, improper handling, and HORRIBLE breeding from breeding the bad traits IN. They have completely screwed up rotts too. Statistics can only count those bites that are recorded, I know alot of people who don't go to doctor when bit by small dogs in a minor way. Who knows, maybe cockers or shih-tzu's or chihuahua's bite more often, but the big guys do more damage.

I love the typical stereotype for the gang of "bad" dogs. "We" know its ridiculously false, but other dim-witted minds (like the whole judiciary branch) don't.

The "bad-dog-free-roaming-stray-with-spike-collars-on" gang usually consists of a leader that is a Rottweiler paired with both English Bulldog and a Doberman Pinscher. I like how the Bulldog has either a deep New York accent or a overly agreeable Jon Lovitz accent smoking a cigar.

Petey from Little Rascals was an American Bulldog.

My favorite dog movie - All Dogs Go to Heaven, there's an evil bulldog in it.

Monstarr, where did you get that information? From everything I've read, Petey was an American Staffordshire Terrier, not an American Bulldog.

I wonder if monstarr and the other poster are too young to know about the original "our gang", and are thinking of the movie from 94 I think, which does have an American Bulldog in it, although I can not find his name.

I am from the gap in between I think, I watched the little rascals on tv in late night re-runs, but was still in school when the movie came out, I worked at a video store when it came to vhs even, LOL.

I get upset when movies promote a particular breed and don't mention responsible pet ownership (101 Dalmation, Snow Dogs, etc). Movies like The Omen and Resident Evil don't bother that much. I honestly thought the Rotties in the newer Omen movie were gorgeous. When you stop to think about it, those dogs are just doing the same thing they would be doing in a Schutzhund competition. Could it be that Rotties and Dobies end up playing the bad guys so often b/c of their intelligence and trainability?

It is the same with my little breed and the media. How often have you seen a Jack on TV that is not jumping straight up and down? Well except for Eddie on Fraiser who is usually sleeping. My Jacks can jump like that if they get really excited, but for the most part they are more like Eddie.
He's your friend,your partner,your defender your dog.You are his life,his love,his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart.You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion

DON`T FORGET BETTY BOOP HAD A PITTBULL TOO.IT WAS AMERICAS FAVORITE DOG UNTIL THEY STARTED FIGHTING THEM.I HAVE 2 ONE IS ROHDESIAN RIDGEBACK&BOXER THE INSURANCE CO. SAID SHE WAS A PITTBULL AND I HAD TO TAKE HER FOR BLOODTESTS.THE OTHER IS CATAHOULA LEOPARD AND RIDGEBACK MIX.IT`S ALL IN THE HANDLER.
