My one-year-old female chihuahua was never a barker until she reached about 6 months. When I let her outside now, she starts barking at cars, neighbors, etc. and running toward them. It isn't continuous barking, but it is consistent and becoming quite annoying. Is she just trying to protect her territory or prove herself? I say "Quiet!" loudly to her or "Shhh!" but that doesn't seem to help. She also barks when the doorbell rings, so perhaps that's a good thing? Does anyone else who owns a chihuahua (or other breed) have this problem? If so, how have you dealt with it? Thanks for any help you can give!
I used a water bottle with one of my aussies who barked alot when she was younger. When she would bark, I was tell her quiet and at the same time spray her. It didn't take long for her to learn. she is great now. I don't use it outside though. If a car goes by, she barks once or twice, I tell her quiet and it is over. Alot of small dogs feel they have to protect their space. I was told that if plain water doesn't do the trick, you can add some white vinager to it. just a bit.
Thanks, Illusionminis. I have heard about the water bottle thing and will try it if she doesn't stop barking when I tell her to be quiet. Glad to hear it worked for one of your dogs. I must admit it is funny to see my little dog trying to defend her turf against passing cars, dogs, and people.
I know this is an older post, but I have a year old chihuahua as well, I used the water bottle when she barked. It worked pretty well, it got to the point where all I had to d is pick it up and she would instantly get quiet. As far as outside goes, When she was on her leash and barked at people or other dogs coming toward us, I would immediately go the opposite direction and say no bark, than I would walk a bit in the opposite direction and than turn around and go back towards the person or dog. If she barked Id repeat the same thing. It worked most of the time, sometimes she still barks and continues to bark even when we've turned around I just pick her up and tell her no bark. She only barks with someones coming to the door and than quiets down now.
