Im from ireland and My miniture daschund 'Rocky' went down last wednesday...and he has all the same symptoms..dragging back legs and collapsing..Have brought to vet and got xray..shows a few bumps on back..might have to go for surgery as anti-inflammotries are not great..
Just wondering is there anyone who has heard of any succuessful operations...
EXTREMLY strict cage rest. Don't let him do anything but walk a couple of steps to potty. No jumping, no running, nothing. It is very hard to do, but it is amazing how well it works. As soon as he looks better, don't let start being crazy again. Still keep him on the cage rest for at least 2-3more weeks. After everything is said and done, never let him jump up on anything. It is one of the biggest reasons for back problems in Daschunds. Good luck
Actually jumping really has no influence on dachshund back problems, it's a common misconception. I have seen over 200 "back dogs" 30% of the surgical cases were dogs who had been taught to use steps and had been doing so since puppyhood. Weight is a huge problem in this breed, along with bad breeding. They have been bred down to be smaller and more "compact" and that is what is truly messing them up. In the 90's there was a study done on over 100 dachshunds, they were followed for several years. In the end it was determined that the longer Dachshunds with the shorter stockier legs had less back problems than the dachshunds who were shorter and had longer thinner legs. You would think it would be the opposite though. It may have been a small study but it still had results that I doubt would change if done on a larger # of weenies.
Also there are a number of threads already started about back problems, I have posted in a couple of them myself. Good luck with your baby!!!
