our 3 yr old doberman has suddenly developed a weird rash. it is on his neck and chest, armpits and haunches. it doesn't seem to itch or bother him, until i try to touch it for too long. it looks similar to eczema and i've had that for 50 yrs. i've always used a 1% topical cortizone cream with great results.
can i use that on our guy?? i'd rather have an answer from you guys before i dump a ton of money at the vet's. times are tough and all... we thank you and lucky thanks you!
It could be mites. They don't always itch like you would think. That can show up as a rash and they like the armpits, haunches, neck area, any of the warmer places on the dog. You can try to get him a sulfa shampoo at your vet supply, or treat with ivemec. Go to http://www.revivalanimal.com/ to find anything you need to treat mites, or other skin ailments. Give them a call and they are super helpful and you can buy from them, and they tell you how to use the products they sell.
Yea a vet visit. If you don't know what it is, you should not self medicate. You could make things worse. Most dogs don't just get a rash, there is usually a reason. If it doesn't itch, Cort. isn't going to help. It is a steroid and prolonged use is harmful. It doesn't cure anything, it just stops itching.
Making a self diagnosis willy nilly and applying meds that may not be for the condition they have can be very harmful and dangerous. Go to a vet, let him tell you what is needed to help her, then you could always order it online to save money if you choose.
