I have a friend that has a chihahua and she had 3 puppies and 2 have lived so far, but for some reason her nipples are not showing and the puppies can not feed from her. Her milk glands are very full and she looks miserable, but we cannot find anything on the internet to help us figure out how to get help for her. The Vet gave us a shot to try and help her, but it has not done anything for her nipples so far. Has anyone gone through this and have any advice to help us? These puppies are the size of rats and we would really like to help them live, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Right now we are feeding them with a bottle.
If they can not nurse off of mom, the only choice you have is hand feeding. Every 2 hours day and night. Does mom just not have nipples? I have seen a birth defect, that one or two nipples are missing, but never all of them. have you tried "milking" each teet to see if there is any milk comming out. If in the end, there is no milk comming, it will soon dry up and you will just have to hand feed the puppies.
The nipples not showing doesn't make sense. nipples don't just show up, either they are there or they are not. They don't change after delivery. So this part of your post is a bit confusing.
That is the weird part. If she squeezes the milk glads you can see milk come out, but the teet is not big enough for the babies to grab onto. It is like the size of a zit or smaller. Her milk glands are just huge so she has to be miserable. She is such a tiny dog and we was worried she was going to have a hard time even having the babies, but she did wonderful having them, and now she is having a problem with this. She called the vet and talked to her about this problem and that is when they told her to come in and get that shot, but the shot didn't do any good. And if you squeeze softly on them milk will slowly come out so you would think there has to be a way to get the puppies to get milk from her without hurting her.
If she continues to express the milk, odds are she is not going to dry up, which is evidently why the vet gave her the shot. I'm with LON, lots of sleepless nights ahead to keep the pups fed and healthy. Good luck to your friend.

kasamid, I have a bitch with a couple of inverted nipples. when she has puppies I help her keep from getting mastitis in them by pulling back the swollen breast to better expose the nipples, then I take the most vigorous puppy or puppies and work with them to get them to latch on. Your friend's dam could have other problems if this issue isn't resolved quickly so your friend should get her to a vet and also be prepared to hand feed those pups or find someone who is willing to do it or at least help her with it... it is quite a huge task. She will also want to make sure the mother dog is stimulating the puppies to potty. If not she will have to do that too or the pups will not make it.
Thank you all so much for the help. She has been doing everything possible and so far the one puppy is doing great, but the small one didn't make it. The other one is gaining weight and doing good though and the mother is stimulating her so hopefully she will be ok. One thing I guess I should have made clear is this dog was given to my friend to take care of and was told that she cannot get pregnant by her friend that breeded these dogs as she was in the process of moving. So when she became pregnant it was a very big shock to my friend and then when all of this happened it was very upsetting to my friend. She has dogs, cats, horses and rabbits for pets, and animals mean the world to her, and she does not like to see any animal suffer. And when the owner of this dog refused to come and get the dog, or even act worried it upset her, and now she has full responsiblity of this dog and it's puppy and has to worry about this woman showing up at any moment saying she wants them after she has paid out hundreds of dollars in vet bills. She said had it been her dog she would have gotten her spayed, as she is so small plus she is not into breeding dogs. I missed the post by Kristina but I got a feeling that I am glad I missed it.
