Hello, I am fostering a boxer pup with mange and I'm trying to fatten him up. Some questions...I'm feeding him more than what the vet food recommends and adding rice to it. How many times a day is too much or not enough? Also, we are giving him supplements, does anyone recommend anything else? The vet is treating the mange with a topical treatment that is combined with his flea & tick each month. Heartworm med is separate. [My bullie uses flea/tick/heartworm topical treatment monthly]
I think the best way is to feed the P/D, give him as much as he can eat. Feed a few meals during the day. You should aim for a healthy weight, not over weight -right? I'm assumeing hes overly thin, showing ribs? Is the rice necessary? Is he eating everything, if hes eating lots of rice, he may not get enough of the puppy food. Have you maybe mixed the wet with the dry? There is an A/D recovery diet, could use to supplment the diet.Did the Vet recommend the other supplements?
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
I like Satin Balls, they have a lot of protein and if made right, plenty of nurients. You can google it and find a ton of recipes. I kinda used several to make one of my own. They only thing I didn't see on many was flaxseed, and I added that myself. I used them as treats a couple times a day with the dogs regular food. You don't want to fatten him up to quickly, it could cause more problems. It should be gradual.
Thank you all for giving me advice. I was mixing a cup of rice with 16 oz of vet dog food; however, the vet told me the rice was not necessary and to feed him as much puppy food as he will eat because it has more calories, etc. than the rice does.
And yes, the poor boxer has ribs showing...very thin. He is the sweetest boy and I want to help him feel good, comfortable without itching, and well fed.
I appreciate your advising me not to have him gain too fast.
Yes, he's getting supplements and vitamin along with his food.
