What do you use to walk your dogs with...a collar or a harness type thing? Ace is a chihuahua & I have read that they're prone to collapsed tracheas. I am not sure if a collar around his neck would cause this but I don't like the way the collar pulls on his neck when he runs around outside on a leash (even though it has a 16 foot lead). So I got him a harness from PetCo the other day and it looks so adorable on him but he really doesn't like it much. He runs sideways sometimes until he gets used to it (I only have it on him when we're outside). What do you use on your small dogs? Am I wrong that having a collar can cause a collapsed trachea (when he is pulling on the leash)? Im probably exagerating this but I'm just curious.
Lol, they necks are soo tiny! Ace had a kitten collar when I first got him but he's grown!! I got him a regular collar but he RUNS! like a maniac when I bring him outside that I feel like Im choking him sometimes! I have one of those retractable leashes if you push the button it stops and let it go so he can run. I hate feeling like Im pulling on his neck!
i would definitely suggest a harness. my yorkie has a collapsible trachea (when she gets very excited or breathes too deep it collapses). she doesn’t often wear a leash but when she does it is always attached to a harness. another thing that my dog picked up... on the retractable leash i have for her, if you gently push down on the button, it makes a clicking noise when the leash comes out. mazel learned that when the leash clicked she had to stop or else she would get tugged. she is such a smarty pants! try it with your dog, im sure he will catch on quick!!
I had two toy poodles, one of which was very small. I used the harness for both of them. One of them didn't like it at first, but he got used to it fairly quickly. I just felt like it spread out the weight or pull so that it wasn't concentrated right on the neck, since they were small, and the little one was so delicate.
I have Chihuahuas. Both hate the harness. Bella Blue will rub her body against the couch thinking she can rub it off somehow... silly dog. Holly is only 2 lbs and I had to get a kitten harness for her. If you only leave it on your baby when you are outside then he or she will get used to it eventually.
I think my Chihuahuas do best with a harness, but you have to give it time to get use to it. Most dogs will pull on it for a while so a little work at a time is better than a first time walk around the block. Good Luck
I used regular collars with my little dogs at first, but they kept making choking sounds whenever they pulled on the leashes. I switched to harnesses for them, and now everyone is happy and comfortable. They still pull to the leash limit and would if the leash was 1/2 mile long, but they aren't choking anymore:)
i use a harness for my beagle. i don't like pulling her AT ALL like some people do when their dogs won't move and are just sitting there or sniffing something. i'm still reluctant to even tug her with the harness, but using a collar scared me. >.<
