My baby boy Wall-e is only 9 mos old and when we rescued him he had Demodectic Mange, we treated him and it seemed to clear up, but it didnt. He has very little fur (no under coat) he is bald on top of his head, and has TERRIBLE sores all over his body, we have tried everything, change diet, peroxide to sterilize infected areas, bathing...etc. I don't know what it is or how to treat it, and to add to it, I just moved to Chicago from Ocala, Florida and I don't even know a vet around here....and Im kinda financially limited....although I would sell everything I own to make my lil baby boy better! SOMEONE PLEEEEEEEASE Give me some advice!!! Sidenote I also have another dog, Guapo, and he is Full catahoula and he has a dry spot on his back by his tail, but never anything worse, which makes me think its an Immune system thing.......DESPERATE!
First - are you sure it's demodectic mange and not sarcoptic? You treat them very differently so it really does matter.
Are you using Promeris on him? We adopted a dog - or I should say - he adopted us and he has demodectic mange. The vet put him on Promeris, once a month indefinitly. Our other dogs get Frontline and he gets his Promeris. When it first flared up they also gave him a pill, a steroid, I believe to help his immune system get over the initial shock. I believe they have a medicated wash or something too if it is really bad. The Promeris isn't expensive, I think it is like $10.00 for a month's dose.
Demodectic isn't exactly a virus but you kind of have to treat it like one because it does focus on their immune system. Therefore, if you don't treat it right it won't get better. Since you took him to the vet in Ocala I would call him and ask if he can transfer your records to the new vet. That way, hopefully, they won't have to run the tests again, they can just administer the medication.
I just checked and the Promeris is only available through a vet. If nothing else, contact the vet where you are now and tell them what he has and ask if they can just give you the medication. I doubt they will unless they see him but it is worth a shot. He probably won't get better until you get medication from your vet. Hope this helps! Good luck!
[b]I would say that your dog has a staph infection because he has probably scratched and bit at the sore itchy areas on his body, and it easily could have spread. The Florida climate would only make this worse. I would definitely take him to the vet because antibiotics are indicated if this is the case. This is only my opinion though,a vet is really needed in this situation. Have you noticed any fleas on him? What are you feeding him?
