Hello my name is Sasha and my baby girl Miri just gave birth to 5 beautiful healthy puppies yesterday. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I need to have the puppies dew claws removed. I am also looking for any other information you can give me about the puppies and caring for them. Thank you!!
Congrats on the litter. What breed of puppies do you have? If you are planning on having the dews removed, it needs to be done no sooner than 3 days and no later than 5 days.
Mom needs to be on a high quality puppy food and have plenty of fresh water available at all times. Frequent bathroom breaks are a must for her and I feed mine 4-5 times a day. I also crush a TUMS and sprinkle that in her food for the first 2 weeks.
Make sure the puppies stay warm and dry. Keep them inside and away from drafts or air conditioning. Let mom have plenty of time with them but make sure she doesn't lay or step on them. The first 10-14 days are the most critical.
If you need help, ask God; if you don't, thank God.
Tums, or any calcium suppliment, even raw egg shells. This prevents preeclampsia which they used to call milk fever. If these are mixed breeds, it's not neccessary, but dewclaws on adult dogs ,left untrimmed can grow into the flesh of the leg, kind of like a ram's horns. If they're within the 5 day window, I would do it.
