I recently got a maltipoo puppy for my 9 year old daughter. She loves him and is very good with him. I do alot of the caring for the puppy though, no surprise there! Anyway, it's been about a week and he eats grass when we take him out to potty. Not alot, but a little. He has been hacking now like he's got something stuck in his throat. Also, he's had soft stool since he came home with us. What could this be? I don't have alot of money to go to the vet, I will though if neccessary. Please help! Does this sound familiar to anyone?
A vet visit is always a good idea with a new puppy. Just to make sure everything is ok. Also the pup needs shots. The eating grass could be nothing. My poodle ans my Aussies eat it all the time. Esp. in the spring when the new grass is sweet.
Hacking could be a sign of anything from a heart problem to a collapsed trachea. I had a mini aussie who hacked once in a while, and my vet thought her trachea was the problem. Not a big deal just no collars and leashes. I showed her for 2years, gained her championship, and when I went to have her hips done for breeding, we found it was not her trachea, but her heart. We went to a cardiologist, and found she has faulty heart valves. She was spayed and is living the perfect pet life. He life will be fine, and she is a happy, normal, spoiled girl.
The simple fact is, problems no matter how small should be checked out. With the economy in the state it is in, any little expense can be difficult, but this comes with getting a puppy. Problems can and do arise. Good luck
Another problem could be "kennel cough". You can get a shot for this at most health supply stores and give it yourself, if that doesn't freak you out. It is a preventative vaccine but it also cures most cases. Not everyone will admit that but my vet says so and I've found that he is right. But it probably would be a good idea to get the puppy checked by a vet regardless. That initial puppy checkup can prevent alot of problems and expense later on. Best wishes
