This fourm is to share stories about your Coton De Tulear. My story is about my 2 year old Coton, Sammy. So, today my older sister and I were sitting on the dining room floor petting Sammy. Then he puts his front paws on my sister's shoulder and starts licking her nose and forehead. It was hilarious! We figured he was doing it because my sister had just eaten a piece of toast and had crumbs on her face.
I know, right! Sammy is a bit lazy. Earlier today him and I were playing fetch inside in the hallway. I threw his favorite toy and he just layed there looking at me like I was crazy! Usually I have to run around the house with his toy to perk him up. Sammy's going to get over weight if I don't play fetch with him for 15 to 20 minutes a day. I try to make exercising as fun as possible for him. He's already a pound or so over...
Keeva is just a puppy still...so only weighs 5 pounds. Her mom and dad weighed in at 9 and 10 pounds. She is such a love but a handful of energy right now. Today she realized that she could bark at the TV. I hope this latest fad doesn't last long! Most of the time she is pretty laid back but she has her moments of extreme energy. Have you had your coton long?
We've had him a little over 2 years. Sammy barks at the tv sometimes, too! Did you get your Coton from a breeder? By the way, I think Sammy is 18 pounds. Just make sure your Coton stays between 12 and 15 pounds. You can read about them on this website. Just click on "Select Breed", then there's a huge list of all kind of different dog breeds. There all in alphabetical order, it's helpful!

Yes cotonbuddy, we got our little coton from a breeder. She just weighs 5.6 pounds now. She is 15 weeks old. I was so proud of her as she hasn't had any accidents on the house since the first week we got her except tonite she shocked us by peeing in the bathroom. I guess we have a little more work to do. I wonder at what age do they consider a coton to be an adult dog. do you know? She is real active in the morning and then has another burst of energy in the early evening. The rest of the time she is pretty lazy. Do you groom your dog yourself? If so, please tell me what you do. Thanks
I heard somewhere around 18 months they're considered adults. I brush Sammy evey day. (brushing a dog's coat keeps their skin healthy) My mom takes him to the groomers every two months to get his hair trimmed, a bath, nails clipped, hair brushed, and teeth brushed. Do you brush your coton every day? By the way it's good to get off with an early start in training, so, try teaching her a basic command like sit after she's completly house trained. Then, try teaching her another basic command after she's learned sit. Just don't overwhelm her or confuse her by teaching her 2 tricks at once. Be sure to have her socialize with humans and other dogs. =) My family and I messed up from the beginning with Sammy. We really never had him socialize with humans and other dogs, we used to never correct him when he'd mouth on our hands, and didn't started early training with him. All we did was house train him. But, he still has a seirious nipping problem that cannot be solved. Other than that he knows 7 commands that I taught him when he was one, and is good with other dogs (he usually says "hi" to them and lays down and gets bored...) and most humans. So I guessed most of it worked out well. We got lucky! He's most likely from a puppy mill, so...

Right now I would say that Keeva's coat is medium long but her dad and mom had long hair. I thought all Cotons had long hair. I plan on taking her to a groomer next month so she will get used to it. I brush and comb her everyday but it is a struggle. She wants to eat the brush. I have already taught her to come, sit, down and up. She is very mouthy with a leash and with our hands. We are taking her to puppy kindergarten starting next week. I hope the person will have some advice to curb the chewing on us and the leash. She is pretty good though. No more potty accidents at all and she sleeps really good in a crate next to our bed. She is real good around new people and we took her to a doggy daycare and when we picked her up she was running around with her new friends....three HUGE dogs! So, I think she is doing pretty good. I like this daycare so am going to take her there periodically so she will be around other dogs. I hope I am doing everything right as I want her to be a good dog and companion. I guess I just need to keep up with the brushing so she will get used to it more. Does your Coton walk nicely on the leash??? Any other advice you can give me???? Thanks for writing!
I think Keeva will do great with puppy kindergarten, she sounds very smart! Good luck. It's good to know that she's socializing with other dogs. It might be a good idea to wash her face with special doggy shampoo and clean her ears and brush her teeth once a week. Your vet can show you how to do these tasks properly. (if you don't already do this) Most of the time Sammy walks well on his leash. He actually went for a half hour walk earlier this evening, but yet he's still not tired out. =)
Yes, I have been brushing her teeth with my finger and am starting to use the brush a little. I do wash her face everyday as she gets those tears around her eyes and they dry out into little blobs. She likes me washing her face. I just made an appt. with a groomer for the middle of March. I want her to get used to that. The groomer is excited because she has never worked on a Coton before. In fact where I live no one I have met has ever seen one! Makes her quite popular...at least with dog lovers! She is so funny. Each evening she has one of her zoomies where she runs around our house like she has gone nuts with excitement. After a bit she collapses and just gets really mellow! She is a funny one for sure! My only problem with her is the chewing of our hands. She doesn't realize how much her puppy teeth hurt! I have tried the yipping but she just seeks to get more excited. Ignoring her works better as she wants lots of attention! Hopefully she will outgrow this nipping at our hands! (by the way..she loves Bitter apple spray and even Tabasco...I tried that on her leash and she just loves it! :(
Oh yes, I have even had people guess that she is a bichon. I always explain that they are a breed of their own. Even our vet has never seen one. I found out about them on the internet and then saw my first one in Scotland of all places. Keeva got to play outside today and she dug and dug. I had to give her a bath when we came in as her face was so muddy. It rains a lot here in the Pacific Northwest. She doesn't mind her bath but she doesn't care for the blowdryer. I wonder how she will do at the groomer How did you learn about Cotons?
Well, actually without even caring what breed I bought I got one from a pet store. I just wanted a dog without caring what breed it was. After I got him I did do some reseach. I kinda made a big mistake...
Why do you think it was a mistake? Sammy sounds delightful Or are you talking about getting him at a pet store? Everything I have learned about dogs I have learned on the computer. We had a dog before keeva but did not get him as a puppy and so this is new to us! We are retired and with Keeva I feel just plain TIRED! She is a bundle of energy. I am more used to cats but my husband thinks dogs are so much better. Everyone tells me that pups mellow out a lot after they get older. My husband had to have surgery and after he heals I will have more help with the puppy. Probably I won't feel so overwhelmed then.
I was talking about getting him from a pet store. What kind of dog did you used to have? Sammy right now, is napping by my back door, as warm air from the vent blows on him. He looks so cute! What's Keeva doing right now? Sammy's so calm in the afternoon he usually just sleeps on and off on the couch. In the morning is the best time when he has energy.
Keeva is asleep right now on my foot. She just got done with one of her"zoomies" around the kitchen island. She loves the heat vents too! The first time she laid down on one I thought something must be wrong with her but she loves the air blowing on her! Sammy sounds so cute. What is your favorite thing about Sammy? Keeva has been an angel all day today..hardly any of that chewing on my hands. We had a little sunshine today she we tethered her outside and she came in all muddy. I just plop her into the laundry tub and rinse her off good and she doesn't mind at all. I guess she thinks that it is worth the price to get to play outside Keeva just woke up and I watched her. She went and found a little bone she had hidden under a piece of furniture (I wondered if she would remember where she hid it!!!). She just laid down again and has it hanging out of her mouth! Looks pretty funny!!! Have a good day! OOPS forgot to tell you our other dog was a mutt. Medium size...the vet thought part Australian Shepherd. He was an outside dog (his choice) and really was our son's but our son couldn't keep him because of his apartment so.....we ended up with Bear. He was a very good dog....lived to be 14 years old.
Keeva does smile! Today we went for a walk and she met 12 other dogs! She was a little nervous but real good. They were all barking but she didn't bark. They were all little dogs....yorkies etc. When we got home she threw up. I think she was probably just nervous and it caused her to throw up. I hope so. She is napping right now. Tonite is her first puppy kindergarten class. That should be fun....hopefully she does well. I see you are online now! What is your Sammy up to? I need to go start our dinner. Will let you know how the puppy kindergarten went. Have a nice evening!
